SEC retires 43 senior staff, closes down 4 zonal offices

The Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday said it had retired 43 senior members of staff and closed down its four zonal offices in Kaduna, Ibadan, Onitsha and Maiduguri. In a statement posted on its website, the commission said it was “undergoing a major restructuring of its operations to boost staff morale and improve service delivery to all stakeholders” .

Mali gunmen attack police post in capital

Two gunmen wearing turbans attacked a bus station in the Malian capital late on Wednesday, seriously wounding a police officer and another person, security sources and a witnesses said. An intelligence source earlier told Reuters that two police officers had died in the attack. There was no official comment from the government.

Divers Searching for 2 Missing in Nigerian Chopper Crash

Nigerian Navy divers will help search Thursday for two people missing when a helicopter flying from an offshore oil rig crashed into a lagoon in the Nigerian commercial capital of Lagos, a rescue official said. Rescuers recovered four bodies on Wednesday from the crash of a U.S.-made Sikorsky S-76C+ belonging to the Houston, Texas-based Bristow Group.

Iraq truck bomb kills dozens at Baghdad market

The truck bomb targeted one of the busiest markets in Baghdad More than 50 people have been killed after a truck bomb exploded in north-eastern Baghdad, Iraqi officials say. The blast tore through the crowded Jameela market in the predominantly Shia district of Sadr City. The Sunni jihadist group, Islamic State (IS), said it was behind the bombing and that it targeted Shia militiamen.

Naira now 221 as CBN sells dollars

The naira on Wednesday appreciated to 221 from 224 against the dollar at the parallel market after the Central Bank of Nigeria sold about $80m to Bureaux de Change operators. The United States currency was sold to the BDCs at N197, helping the naira to strengthen at the black market. On the interbank market, the naira ended at the bank’s pegged rate of 197 to the dollar.
