PDP drags Amaechi to EFCC

THE Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State on Tuesday insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari must investigate a former governor of the state, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, over allegations of corruption.

This is just as the party petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, detailing alleged corrupt practices that took place under the Amaechi administration.

The PDP Deputy Publicity Secretary in Rivers, Mr. Samuel Nwanosike, said since President Buhari had promised to maintain a zero tolerance for corruption, he should not be silent on how the past administration in Rivers managed the state.

Daniel: Now that the matter has gone to the EFCC, President Muhammadu Buhari stands to gain from its outcome. If Amaechi is found guilty, it will further boost the reputation of Buhari as a President who will not shield any corrupt individual, no matter how close the person is to him.

But if he is proved to be innocent, Buhari, Amaechi and even the APC will gain more political leverage. Going to the EFCC is the most appropriate thing to do, and they have done that.

Otitokoro: It is obvious that the allegations are cooked up to tarnish the reputation of Amaechi before Buhari. One would have expected that the allegations would be backed with facts and figures. This is one thing that makes a difference between the APC and the PDP. When the APC members want to accuse somebody of graft, they present facts, figures, dates and, sometimes, relevant documents.

So far, what the PDP members have done is to make noise just to get public attention. That will not advance their cause. I don’t support corrupt government officials. But when somebody raises allegations, there should be adequate facts. Otherwise, we will not know who is corrupt from who is not. Until the PDP members lay their hands on facts and figures, they should just keep quite.

Ighile: The speculation is that Buhari’s election was funded with stolen money. This is the reason the Amaechi case is very tricky. It may not be an easy decision for the President to allow the EFCC to do a thorough job. I doubt if he will allow Amaechi or any other individual that was part of his campaign team to be rubbished.

Shasha: All Nigerian politicians are dubious. As far as I am concerned, there is no difference between the PDP and the APC. Their members have both stolen from the country. They are greedy and self-centred people who think of nothing but to steal anything they can lay their hands
