Corrupt government worse than armed robbery – Buhari

The presidential standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has declared that a corrupt government is worse than armed robbery. Gen. Buhari stated this at APC’s Town Hall meeting on security, held at the Barcelona Hotel, Abuja, on Wednesday. He explained that security goes beyond having the best Police Force and the military, adding that it involves strong economic management, which include zero tolerance for corruption as well as leadership by example.

Blatter Opts Out Of Televised Fifa Debate

Sepp Blatter has ruled himself out of plans for a televised debate involving all four accredited candidates for the Fifa presidential election. The trio of Fifa vice-president Prince Ali Bin al Hussein of Jordan, Dutch FA boss Michael van Praag and former Portugal international Luis Figo had all consented to an arrangement for a live debate but the incumbent has rejected invitation. The Football Association (FA) chairman, Greg Dyke, had offered to anchor the debate- a joint BBC and Sky initiative- at Wembley, but it will no longer hold following the Swiss administrator’s withdrawal.

Augustine Akobundu (retd.) (State, Defence) Mr. Fidelis Nwankwo (State, Health) Mrs. Hauwa Bappa (State, Niger Delta Affairs) Mr. Kenneth Kobani (State, Industry, Trade and Investment) Senator Joel Ikenya (Labour and Productivity). President Jonathan also seized the opportunity to officially name the Minister of State, Health, Khaliru Alhassan, as the Minister of Health.

United States Vice President, Joe Biden, has been in touch with both President Goodluck Jonathan and the presidential candidate of his main challenger, General Muhammadu Buhari, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the March 28 presidential election. Speaking to both men on Wednesday, Biden commended President Jonathan and General Buhari for signing the Abuja Accord in mid-January as a show of their commitment to non-violence throughout the election process.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says Monaco did not deserve their place in the Champions League quarter-finals after failing to register a shot on target in the second leg of their tie. The Ligue 1 side advanced on away goals after beating Arsenal 3-1 at Emirates Stadium before losing 2-0 in Monaco. Asked if Monaco deserved to progress, Wenger said: "I don't believe so. "If you look at the number of shots on target they had you will be surprised. Every defeat hurts but we didn't lose."

Swedish police: Several people shot, 2 dead, in restaurant

Several people were shot inside a restaurant in the city of Goteborg late Wednesday and at least two of them have died, Swedish police said. Police said in a statement that an automatic weapon is believed to have been used in the shooting. They had no details on any suspects. The shooting happened in the Biskopsgarden suburb of Goteborg, Sweden’s second largest city. The neighborhood has a history of gang violence, said police spokeswoman Ulla Brehm.

US veteran denies Islamic State terror charges

A US Air Force veteran accused of trying to join Islamic State has appeared in court in New York and denied all charges. Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh, a 47-year-old former aircraft mechanic from New Jersey, spoke only to repeat his name to the judge. His lawyer, Michael K Schneider, entered the plea on his behalf. Mr Pugh has been charged with trying to provide material support to a terrorist group and obstructing justice.

FIFA referees to undergo medical, fitness tests in Abuja

Nigeria’s men and women FIFA referees, have been pencilled down to undergo medical tests in Abuja this Friday, ahead of the first quarter fitness programme. According to Sani Zubairu, the Secretary of the NFF Referees Committee, all the referees who could not participate in the last fitness test held in December 2014, will take part this weekend. The programme, which will be held at the mainbowl of the National Stadium Complex, is to ensure they qualify to officiate in the 2015 football season.

China and Japan hold first security talks in four years

Chinese and Japanese officials shook hands at the start of the meeting in Tokyo China and Japan are holding their first high-level security talks in four years, following recent tensions over territorial and historical issues. The meeting in Tokyo among officials comes ahead of trilateral talks with South Korea on Saturday. The last round of talks was in 2011, before ties worsened over a row over islands in the East China Sea.

US drone kills al-Shabab leader in Somalia - Pentagon

Al-Shabab militants have been driven out of the group's strongholds in Somalia The US defence department has confirmed that it has killed an al-Shabab leader, Adan Garar. The Pentagon says the militant was hit by a drone equipped with Hellfire missiles in southern Somalia last Friday. Garar was a suspect in the 2013 Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi that left 67 people dead. The US believes Garar was overseeing operations that "target US persons and other Western interests".

Habib Essi told RTL Radio that security services had flagged up one of the attackers, Yassine Laabidi, but were not aware of "anything specific", or of any links to known militant groups.
