No woman governor for Nigeria yet as APC’s ‘Mama Taraba’ is defeated

Expectations by Nigerians that Saturday’s election would yield the first female governor in Nigeria’s history has been dashed. The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Taraba, Aisha Al-Hassan, who put up a strong showing in the race and who was thought to have won as collation continued into the second day, has now been defeated.

Oba of Lagos, Rilwam Akiolu The Sun reports that the protest was carried out under the auspices of the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN). The group which condemned the monarch for his threat to Igbo living in the commercial city also took their protest to the White House in Washing­ton D. C. and Nigeria High Commission in London.

INEC Declares Al-makura Winner In Nasarawa State

Governor Tanko Al-makura of the All Progressives Congress, has been declared winner of the April 11 governorship election in Nasarawa State with 309,746 votes. Mr Al-makura emerged victorious, winning in 12 out of the 13 Local Government Areas, leaving Mr Labaran Maku of APGA in second place with 178,983 votes. The APC has also won 19 out of the 24 seats at the State House of Assembly while the PDP won Five seats, relinquishing the majority it has enjoyed since 2011.

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is to investigate cases of the violence against polling units, the commission’s officials, voters and election materials during the governorship and state Assembly elections at the weekend. The Commission in a statement made available to newsmen yesterday vowed that the electoral umpire will do everything within its powers to prosecute the culprits, just as it urged aggrieved persons or groups to seek redress at the tribunals.

INEC's returning officer, Prof Faraday Oruwense announced the results this morning. He said Wike pulled a total of 1,029,102 votes to beat his main opponent, APC's Dakuku Peterside who had 124,896 votes.
