Govt. sacks NLC leader, claims he is a ghost worker

(Elombah) The Kogi state chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Onuh Eboka has been fired by the state government. The government claims Edoka was identified as a ghost worker during the just concluded staff verification exercise. The government also said those that were sacked did not furnish the verification committee with relevant documents.

Dana Air pilots strike leaves passengers stranded

  A disagreement with management over promised largess has snowballed into a strike action by pilots of Dana Airlines resulting in the suspension of normal flight operations on Thursday. Scheduled flights have been disrupted with passengers booked to travel with the airline stranded at airports across the country. At the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, announcements are made intermittently to communicate the development to customers waiting to board flights.

  A peculiarly Nigerian type of frenzy happened last week. The event was triggered by a report that a young woman named Amina Ali Nkeki, one of the more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls abducted the night of April 14, 2014, had been rescued. The initial reports disclosed that a vigilante group rescued Amina last Tuesday as she wandered along the edges of Sambisa Forest in the company of a man who claimed to be her husband, but was suspected to be a Boko Haram insurgent, and a four-month baby in her arms.

Niger-Delta Avengers blow up another pipeline

A Niger Delta militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, which has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on oil and gas installations in Delta and Bayelsa State has claimed responsibility for another attack. The attack was carried out early this morning and affected an underground Chevron crude oil trunk line located in Delta state. The trunk line is located along the Seria Creek near Abiteye, a few kilometres away from the company’s multi-billion dollars Tank Farm in Escravos, Warri South West local government area of Delta State.

One dead and 27 rescued as boat capsizes in Lagos

  Lagos warns against non-compliance to safety rules A commercial ferry with 28 passengers aboard yesterday capsized few metres away from Origin Jetty where it took off, killing at least one passenger while 27 others survived the accident. The commercial boat, HMS I, took off at about 9.55a.m. from Ebute in Ikorodu to Addax Jetty in Victoria Island was overloaded, although that was not the only cause of the mishap.

Osinbajo to inaugurate prosecution committee

The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), will on Friday inaugurate the National Prosecution Coordination Committee, which is charged with the responsibility handling high profile, public interest cases. The Spokesperson for the committee, Salihu Isah, said this in a statement on Wednesday. Isah, who is also the Media Adviser to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), said Osinbajo would inaugurate the committee on Friday at the Presidential Villa. He said the committee, comprising 19 members, had the mandate of ensuring “the efficient, effective and result-oriented prosecution of high profile criminal cases in the country.”

MTN launches N59bn TV service

The country on Wednesday took a step into the era of telecommunications, broadcasting and media convergence as MTN Nigeria commenced the pilot of its digital television broadcasting service in Jos, Plateau State. The TV service, which goes live today (Thursday), is sequel to the issuance of a digital broadcast licence to MTN for N34bn, by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation in 2015. Aside the N34bn, sources said that the telecoms company had spent about N25bn extra to get the TV running.

Reps Order Halt Of Refineries Privatisation

   The House of Representatives Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation has directed the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to stop its planned privatisation of the nation’s refineries or joint investment ventures with some multinationals. The committee’s chairman, Hon. Ahmed Yerima (APC, Bauchi), who gave the order yesterday in Abuja during an interactive session with the managements of the NNPC and Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) on the planned privatisation of three refineries in the country, said the process was in breach of relevant laws.

No peace talks; 'terror on enemies' will continue - New Taliban leader

  The new Afghan Taliban leader has told commanders and the group's supreme leadership council that there will be no peace talks with the Afghan government, a source in the group reached through an intermediary said Wednesday. The source said that Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada, newly appointed to lead the terror group after a U.S. drone strike killed Mullah Akhtar Mohammed Mansour, will follow the militant policies espoused by founder Mullah Omar, killed in Pakistan in 2013. The source said that the appointment of Akhundzada "will bring back the era of Mullah Mohammad Omar," referring to the one-eyed mujahedeen commander who led the group from its inception in 1994, with "a simple life, loyalty, and terror on enemies."

Why Nnamdi Kanu lost in court?

Earlier the Federal High Court has produced a ruling on this case. Nnamdi Kanu from Biafra has filed application to the appeal court wanting to cancel that ruling. He received a heavy blow, as that application got dismissed. Biafra leader wanted to be released from prison on bail, but the court considers the possibility of him escaping from Nigeria, as he has double citizenship. On May 25th the decision was made and by all means it was not welcomed by Kanu.

Lagos, investors sign N844b Fourth Mainland Bridge deal

•Governor Ambode LAGOS State Government and a consortium of investors yesterday struck a deal on the N844billion Fourth Mainland Bridge, which is expected to address the chaotic traffic in the metropolis. The bridge, which is being constructed under Build, Own and Transfer (BOT), is expected to be completed in three years. The Federal Government, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said, is not funding the project, which, according to him, has become imperative following the state’s phenomenal growth, with over 21 million population.

Paul Boroh, has warned the perpetrators that the Federal Government will not reward criminals with medals under the guise of seeking peace. This has come just at the Amnesty coordinator has indicated his resolve to move into the creeks of the Niger Delta to hold peace talks with aggrieved individuals and groups to end the bombings that have substantially cut oil output and slowed Nigeria’s income in recent weeks.
