Sadiq Abacha responds to Wole Soyinka: Attacking my father is an act of cowardice

Image
I have grown and watched you criticize  regime  after regime and at that young and naive age I was thinking why wouldn’t this man just contest to be president so that Nigeria can be saved, I would have defiantly voted for Mr Soyinka if it would have brought an end to Nigeria’s woes. To my utter surprise, I heard about your FRSC leadership and how funds were misused and a  great deal  of it unaccounted for. If you want to think, speak and act logically then you should know all three. 1. The law of identity 2. The law of excluded middle 3. The law of non contradiction. Now let’s look at each one of these and see what they mean in practice. 1. The law of identity The law of identity means  that things  are what they are, which at first doesn’t seem very illuminating, but wait; it implies also the following, that things are what they are, whether you like them or not, it implies that things are what they are whether you know them or not, it implies that things are what they are

Okorocha absent as S/East Govs seek Obi’s successor

Image
A meeting of governors of the  South East  geo-political zone of the country ended yesterday in a deadlock as the chief executives could not produce a successor to Governor Peter Obi of Anambra state as chairman of their Forum. Governor  Rochas Okorocha  of Imo State, the only All Progressives Congress (APC) governor in the zone did not attend the meeting which sources said was primarily called to select a successor to Governor Obi who would be completing his second term as governor of Anambra State on March 17. The Governors present , left the venue of the meeting in Enugu after protracted closed door deliberations without taking  a  group photograph  or addressing newsmen as had been their practice, fuelling speculations that they could not agree on the choice of Governor of Abia state, Chief Theodore Orji, who before the meeting the odds favoured. Those who attended the crucial summit were Governor Obi, the host, Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu state who made a surprise a

NPDC remits $6bn to NNPC account – Briggs

Image
The  Nigerian Petroleum  Development Company Limited (NPDC) has  said  $6billion was remitted to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC/NPDC account which warehouses all of NPDC’s revenue earnings from its operations.  The Managing Director of NPDC,  Mr. Victor Briggs,  who stated this yesterday in a statement, said the reports quoting the company as denying receiving the sum of $6 billion from its  parent company , NNPC, being proceeds from NPDC’s oil and gas operations, “are misleading and do not reflect the contents of what was submitted to the Senate Committee on Finance”  This is as the NNPC yesterday denied entering into any form of oil business with two Swiss oil  trading companies , Vitol and Trafigura, to defraud Nigerians  of billions of  United States dollars . Mr. Briggs in the statement said: “For the avoidance of doubt, NPDC in its submission stated that the funding relationship between NNPC and NPDC provides for proceeds from Hydrocarbon sales to be pa

Nigeria mulls evacuation of citizens in Ukraine -- Onwuliri

Image
THE Acting Minister of  Foreign Affairs , Prof.  Viola Onwuliri, has said that the ministry is closely monitoring the development in Ukraine and will evacuate Nigerians in the country if the crisis escalates. Onwuliri made the plan known to reporters during a dinner for workers in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja on Tuesday. ``The  Nigerian Embassy  in Ukraine is in touch with our nationals in Ukraine and if the situation demands, we may have to evacuate,’’ she said. According to the minister, there are about 7,000 Nigerians in Ukraine. On the presence of Russian forces in Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula, Onwuliri said Nigeria was a ``non-aligned nation’’ and would not support any party in the ongoing dispute in Ukraine. ``We will always study situations before we draw conclusions. That is what we are doing at this time,’’ she said.

‘Why fuel scarcity persists’

Image
• Marketers push for rise in pump price AS the fuel scarcity continues to cripple economic activities nationwide, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has attributed the shortfall in supply to non-renewal of contracts of some independent marketers to import the product.    Meanwhile, the current fuel scarcity in some parts of the country is principally caused by marketers’ subterranean ploy to stampede government into increasing the pump price, The Guardian has gathered.    But the government is seeking ways of ending the artificial scarcity without bowing to pressure from marketers to increase the pump price.    In a related development,  Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called for an end to the fuel scarcity.   The DPR, which disclosed this yesterday at its budget defence before the  Senate Committee  on Petroleum (Upstream), also alleged that non-payment of subsidy fund to the marketers by government had hindered the importation of the product, resulting in shortage in

Negotiate with Boko Haram, Ndoma-Egba tells northern leaders

Image
Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, has charged northern leaders to   negotiate   with Boko Haram just as their compatriots from the Niger Delta region did to militants some few years ago. He noted that the belated condemnation by the northern leaders of attacks by the Boko Haram Islamic group was not enough. “Once political,   religious leaders   and the elites in the north go into negotiation with the   terrorist group , the end to insurgency will come,” Ndoma-Egba stated in an interview in Calabar on Monday. He also appealed to the insurgents to lay down their arms and go into dialogue with the authorities. The Senate Leader noted that those who have taken up arms against the state were not ghosts hence their kinsmen should call them to a dialogue to ascertain their grievances and what should be done.

Catholics: History and Meaning of Ash Wednesday and Lent

Image
Today, over a billion   Catholics   around the world are celebrating  Ash Wednesday, the official beginning of   Lent   in the faith, without any idea of the history or meaning behind the celebration. While Catholicism seems to be the religion that most people identify Lent and Ash Wednesday with, the truth of the matter is that many other Christian religions celebrate these as well, including Lutherans, Anglicans, Methodists, and Presbyterians. Many may have an idea what Lent is all about, but few know its origins and true purpose. While the true origin of the practice is not known, there are many writings from the third and fourth centuries that speak of a period of fasting leading up to the celebration of the death and resurrection of   Jesus Christ . The early practice of the custom seemed to be centered around the baptizing of persons on Easter. Christians would fast for the forty days leading up to Easter, as a preparation for being baptized. Fasting, in this manner, was see
