U.S. warship sails within 12 miles of Chinese-built island in South China Sea

 A U.S. naval destroyer sailed early Tuesday within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island built by China in the South China Sea, a U.S. defense official said, in a direct challenge to China’s territorial claims. The USS Lassen, a guided-missile destroyer, was accompanied by Navy surveillance planes as it approached the Subi Reef in the Spratly Islands, the official said. The mission “was completed without incident,” said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

91 perish in air strikes on rebel bases in Syria

Tanzania's president-elect, John Magufuli, promised on Friday to speed up economic growth and development in the East African nation, a day after he was declared winner of a presidential vote that his opponent rejected as rigged. Magufuli's ruling CCM party faced its toughest electoral challenge in more than half century in power, after the main opposition parties united for Sunday's vote around a single candidate for the first time, Edward Lowassa.

Kano State government has directed Private and voluntary schools Board to close down Hassan Ibrahim Gwarzo boys Private College with immediate effect over allegations child abuse. The directive was issued by the acting governor of Kano State professor Hafiz Abubakar while inaugurating 14-man committee to investigate the matter. Professor hafiz Abubakar who expressed government concern over the unfortunate report said the committee is under former Vice Chancellor, University of Maiduguri Professor Abubakar Mustapha.

Romanian nightclub fire leaves 27 dead, 184 injured

A fire in a Bucharest nightclub killed 27 people and injured 184 during a rock concert that featured fireworks late on Friday, Romanian government officials and witnesses said. In one of the capital's worst disasters in decades, about 400 people, mostly young adults, stampeded for the only available exit as the club in the basement of a Communist-era sport-shoe factory filled with smoke. Several witnesses said there were fireworks inside the club. Colectiv Club's Facebook page said the show would feature pyrotechnic effects.
