Google and Facebook Team Up to Modernize Old-School Databases

Google completely  changed the world of computer databases  when it published a  research paper describing “Big Table,” a sweeping system it built to store information across its online empire. Released in 2006, the paper revealed an approach to data storage that did away with the traditional model used by  relational databases , which are designed to store data in neat rows and columns on a single machine. Basically, BigTable made it easier to spread data onto hundreds or even thousands of computer servers. Along with a paper published by Amazon about its own adventures in data storage, the Big Table concept spawned dozens of open source imitators. These “NoSQL” databases play a big role inside the biggest names of on the web and beyond, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, as well as Google. Flight MH370: 'Objects spotted' in new search area

A plane has spotted "objects" in the  new area  of the Indian Ocean being searched for missing  Malaysia Airlines flight  MH370, Australian officials say. The sightings would need confirmation by ship, which is not expected until tomorrow, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa)  said . Earlier it was announced the search would now focus on an area 1,100km (700 miles) north-east of the previous zone. The Beijing-bound airliner disappeared on 8 March with 239 people on board. The identity of the objects - spotted by a Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion - were "to be established", Amsa said. The crew say they spotted 11 unidentified objects, the BBC's Phil Mercer reports from the western  Australian city  of Perth. The images hold out the prospect of up-to-date information, as opposed to satellite images which are invariably days out of date by the time they are seen by investigators, our correspondent adds.

A  delegate  at the ongoing National Conference  in Nigeria, retired police AIG, Hamma Misau is dead. Misau  passed  on last night at the National Hospital  in Abuja after battling an undisclosed illness at the age of 67. The late Misau became a trending item after a photo of him sleeping at the conference went viral on the blogsphere. Barrister Mohammed Hamma a cousin to the retired Police Officer  told SaharaReporters that his funeral is due shortly in Bauchi. Misau is a native of Misau in Bauchi state.

Army kills 11 B’Haram members, arrest 31

The arrested Boko Haram members as well as weapons and motocycles seized from them in Taraba and Adamawa States... on Thursday. | credits: DHQ The  Special Forces  have arrested 31 fighters of the Boko Haram Sect who were attempting to flee the country through Taraba State and Gumti in Adamawa State into Cameroon. The Director of  Defence Information , Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, said in an  electronic mail  on Thursday that one of those arrested was a mercenary claiming to be a citizen of Chad and Burkinafaso. Olukolade also said that 11 insurgents were also killed during shootouts with troops in the  border communities. He said that the terrorists who were involved in the encounter with the Special Forces were trapped and were forced out of their hideout by hunger. According for the Defence spokesman, the Special Forces arrested some of the insurgents who left one of the camps in the forest took the security men to similar camps

Fulani herdsmen’s attacks: Governors warn of imminent food shortage

The  Governors  have raised alarm over possible food shortage across the country as 17 states come under threats of attacks from Fulani herdsmen. Some of the states are Plateau, Benue, Adamawa, Niger, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kaduna, Oyo, Delta, Edo, Kogi amongst others. This was disclosed at the end of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting yesterday chaired by Vice President Namadi Sambo. The meeting, which has all 36 state Governors as members and some Ministers, was the first in nine months and the first this year, in which they called for urgent  security measures  to halt the deadly attacks. Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, Governors Jonah Jang of Plateau, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Gabriel Suswam of Benue states and Minister of State for Works and Supervising Minister of National Planning, Bashir Yuguda, said that Council  received presentation by the  National Security Adviser , Col. Ibadan horror forest: Police vows to apprehend culprits

The Assistant  Inspector General  (AIG) of Police in charge of Zone 11, Femi Omolaja has promised that the Police would do everything to apprehend all those behind the evil perperated at the Horror Forest, where scores of human skeletons, skulls and decomposing and mutilated body parts of dead bodies were found last Saturday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. AIG Omojola spoke yesterday when he visited the horrific site, whose demolition was stopped midway on Wednesday following a directive from Abuja. His words:”Thorough investigation is ongoing and we don’t want to disclose any identity of those arrested in order not to hinder our investigation.” But angered by the latest “operation kill  mad men ” going on in the city, where a number of persons have either been lynched or burnt to death after being suspected of being kidnappers or ritualists, Omojola warned the public to desist from taking laws into their hands. MEND claims responsibility for attacks on oil pipelines

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has claimed responsibility for recent attacks on Shell Forcados Sub-C pipeline in the Western Delta. The pipeline which was damaged on March 1, 2014 was undergoing repairs before the latest attack. MEND spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, in a statement, said the latest attack was part of Hurricane Exodus launched by the group to cripple Nigeria’s oil industry. Gbomo also disclosed that MEND was responsible for the attack on Agip pipeline in Ikarama in Yenagoa Local Government  Area of Bayelsa State. The statement read in part: “At about 0300Hrs today Thursday, March 27, 2014,  scuba divers  from the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) revisited the Shell Forcados Sub-C pipeline in the Western Delta which we had sabotaged earlier on Saturday, March 1, 2014. “We were successful in causing further damage to the ongoing  repair works , inflicting the heaviest toll ever on the oil industry since the commencement of ‘Hurric

rainstorm Rain wreaks havoc in Onitsha

Properties worth  millions of naira were destroyed yesterday by rain in the commercial city of Onitsha in Anambra State. Though no casualty was reported at the time of this report, the heavy rain destroyed buildings in various parts of the commercial city and its environs. The  building housing  the Circulation Department of The Sun Publishing Limited at Old Market Road, Onitsha was not spared as a coconut tree  beside fell on the roof of the house, destroying many property. At Okpoko in Ogbaru council area of the state, many structures including residential and  commercial buildings  were pulled down by the rain which started at noon after a heavy wind. It was also gathered that a two-storey building under  construction  collapsed at Atani in Ogbaru council area of the state during the heavy rain while a  recharge card  seller on Onitsha-Owerri Road lost all her  cards and other valuables to the rain.

A Police Corporal ran amock in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital killing his wife, landlady and five others before taking his own life in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. Sunkanmi Ogunbiyi, until his death was attached to the Ogun State Police Command, as well as his late wife who was also a Police Corporal. Before what the Police authorities described as unfortunate incident, the late couple were said to have been having unresolved domestic problems. The incident was said to have occurred at Akingbola Street, in Ifelodun Estate, Eleweran Area of the state capital, where the late couple had once lived before they parted ways. We  reliably gathered that the late Ogunbiyi, who was also a corporal had warned his late landlady to stop harbouring his late wife each time they had misunderstandings. A former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, has accused the ruling Peoples  Democratic Party , PDP, of being the brain behind the formation, growth and sustenance of the Boko Haram sect currently terrorising the nation. The APC leader was reacting to a recent allegation by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, who said that Buhari’s comments, prior to the 2011 election showed that he founded the group. Court Acquits Chidi Lloyd of Attempted Murder

Port Harcourt  – Mr Chidi Lloyd, Majority Leader of the  Rivers House  of Assembly, was on Thursday discharged and acquitted by a  High Court  in Port Harcourt over a charge of  attempted murder . Justice Ledan Nyordee, who delivered the judgment, said there was nothing the  court  could do in the matter as the police was not willing to prosecute the case. Lloyd was arrested and charged with attempted  murder  of Mr Michael Chinda, (PDP- Obio/Akpor 11) in the state legislature. Lloyd was alleged to have hit Chinda on the head with a mace during a fight between the supporters of Gov. Chibuike Ameachi and anti-Amaechi legislators in July 2013. NAN also recalls that the state legislative complex was closed down after the free-for-all.

Residents scampered for safety on Thursday as explosion rocks Shagari Plaza on Moshood Abiola Way, Garki-Area One, Abuja. The quick succession in which the explosion occurred made customers and neighbours to scamper into safety. Many expressed fears that it was a bomb explosion. But an eyewitness account said the first explosion occurred at about 5:17pm when  a gas  cylinder exploded. A jeep parked close to the gas dispenser went up in flames. The gas retailer, who tried to recover his money kept under one of the cylinders, was also caught in the explosion while trying to save his earnings for the day. “He kept it under one of the cylinders. As he was trying to  take the money , another cylinder exploded,” another eyewitness said. Another witness said the retailer took delivery of the gas supply on Wednesday. “They just

Moro takes the blame for immigration jobs tragedy

Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro The embattled Minister of the Interior,  Mr. Abba Moro, on Thursday, apologised to Nigerians over the circumstances that led to the death of 16 people during  the March 15  ill-fated recruitment exercise into the Nigerian Immigration Service. He accepted responsibility for the tragedy which he said could have been averted if the exercise had been attended by only those that registered online for it. The minister stated this when he appeared before the Atiku Bagudu-led  Senate Committee on Interior  probing the  fatal exercise. Before he spoke, the Comptroller-General of the NIS, Mr.  David Parradang and the Secretary of the  Civil Defence , Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board, Mr. Sylvanus, Tapgun, had told the committee   that they were not properly carried along by the ministry in the  planning  of the exercise. The search for missing  Malaysia Airlines flight  MH370 has moved to a new part of the Indian Ocean due to a “credible lead”, Australia says. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said the search would now focus on an area 1,100km north-east of the previous zone. The move was based on more analysis of radar data that showed the plane was going faster, thus using more fuel. The Beijing-bound airliner disappeared on 8 March with 239 people on board. Malaysian officials have concluded that, based on  satellite data , it flew into the sea somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean. So far no trace of it has been found. Search efforts had until Friday morning focused on an area some 2,500km (1,550 miles) to the south-west of the Australian city of Perth.
