Nigerian Troops Kill 30 Insurgents, Recover Arms Near Sambisa

The Nigerian army on Wednesday said it had killed more than 30 Boko Haram insurgents and recovered arms and ammunition during an operation near Sambisa forest in BOrno. This is contained in a statement issued by the acting spokesperson of the army, Col. Sani Usman, in Abuja. The statement said the army had also rescued people held hostage by the insurgents during the operation carried out by troops of the 28 Task Force Brigade, deployed to Bitta and Pridang.

Central African Republic to hold elections on Dec 13

Central African Republic will hold presidential and parliamentary elections on Dec. 13, the electoral commission said on Wednesday, reviving delayed efforts to restore democracy in a country rocked by fighting since 2013. The polls were initially to have been held on Oct. 18 but were postponed, in part due to violence in the capital. A run-off presidential vote will be held on Jan. 24 if needed, state radio said.

U.S., Chinese navy chiefs to discuss South China Sea on Thursday

The Chinese and U.S. navies are set to hold high-level talks over tensions in the South China Sea after a U.S. warship challenged Beijing's territorial assertiveness in the disputed waterway this week. The U.S. chief of naval operations Admiral John Richardson and his Chinese counterpart Admiral Wu Shengli would hold an hourlong video teleconference on Thursday, a U.S. official said. Both officers initiated the meeting to discuss recent operations in the South China Sea as well as naval ties, the official said.
