Ebola scare hits Nigeria again, 10 quarantined in Calabar

University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, has quarantined ten persons following the death of a patient in the hospital on Wednesday with symptoms suspected to be Ebola virus.

Sepp Blatter’s controversial 17-year reign as the Fifa president appears all but over after its ethics committee provisionally banned him for 90 days before the election to decide his successor in February. The Uefa president, Michel Platini, who was the favourite to succeed his mentor-turned-rival until he too become embroiled in corruption allegations, has been handed an identical sanction, dealing a huge blow to his presidential ambitions. Fifa said on Thursday that Issa Hayatou is taking over as acting president.

Lionel Messi and father ordered to court over tax fraud charges

Lionel Messi has been ordered to appear as a defendant after Spain’s public prosecutor argued the Barcelona Lionel Messi and his father, Jorge, have been ordered to appear in court on charges of defrauding the Spanish tax authorities of more than €4m (£3m). Spain’s public prosecutor has recommended a jail sentence totalling 18 months and fines of more than €2m for Jorge Messi for allegedly defrauding the state of €4.2m for the years 2007-2009. Although the prosecutor has argued Lionel Messi should not have to answer the charges as his father oversaw his finances, a court document published on Thursday showed the judge in the case had ruled he must still appear as a defendant.
