Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has urged oil marketers to comply with the new pump price of petrol, which is N87 per litre. In a statement by its President, Igwe Achese, NUPENG noted that most of the filling stations were still dispensing fuel at the old rate of N97 per litre or not selling fuel at all. “It amounts to total disservice for the oil marketers to continue to sell fuel at the old rate, thus exploiting the consumers,” Achese said. Meanwhile, NUPENG has commended the Federal Government for bringing down the price of petroleum products in line with the falling prices of crude oil in the international market.

A US-based policy think-tank, the Brookings Institution has rated President Goodluck Jonathan as favourite to win the February 14 presidential election. In a report by the institute, published under the Africa Growth Initiative with the title: “The 2015 presidential elections in Nigeria: The issues and challenges,” Brookings said Jonathan’s Peoples Domocratic Party (PDP) was more likely to win the February election. The paper, authored by Jideofor Adibe, a Senior Lecturer at Nasarawa State University, dwelt on several aspects of the Nigerian election. It noted that “though the election is expected to be very competitive, the odds still favour President Jonathan.”

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has criticized the Federal Government’s employment policy as full of deceit. He claimed that unemployed Nigerian youths have been fleeced of over N800 million just because they need jobs. Speaking at a rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Agenebode, Fugar and Jattu in Etsako Local Government Areas of the state, Oshiomhole dismissed the claim by the Federal Government that it created three million jobs, as he noted that there was nobody that could point at any of his relations that has been employed by the Federal Government.

The Nigeria Army has said the All Progressive Congress, APC, Presidential Candidate, General Mohammadu Buhari enlisted into the Nigeria Army without the originals, Certified true copies or photocopies of his West African School Certificate, WASC. It said at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday that it had a letter from the Principal of Buhari’s secondary school, dated 1961, recommending him for enlistment into the military school.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), will address the media Wednesday (today) on details of his qualification, following the controversy on whether he is qualified to stand for election come February 14, his campaign office said. The Buhari campaign office said Tuesday that the former head of state will speak to the media at 9a.m. in Kano, where he is currently campaigning for votes. The announcement came hours after the Nigerian Army denied having Mr. Buhari’s West African School Certificate in its possession, in contrast with the APC presidential candidate’s claim.

Soldiers attached to 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala in Ogun State, yesterday, intercepted a truck-load of about 3,600 ballot boxes filled with ballot papers, at Odogbolu axis of the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode Expressway. The team of soldiers, popularly called OP MESSA, reportedly handed over the truck and the contents to the Police in Ijebu-Ode area command. Two other trucks, however escaped, reports Vanguard, citing sources.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned that those who are bent on destroying its Presidential Candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on the basis of his certificates may end up destroying the country’s military. In a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party warned that the PDP and the Jonathan Administration are playing a dangerous game by trying to compromise the military in order to satisfy selfish political objectives, and urged the military, as a symbol of national unity, to beware of those who may be seeking to use it to achieve selfish and divise ends.

The Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act clearly stipulated the minimum qualifications for seeking elective public office. For purposes of this essay, I will classify the qualifications in two broad categories – patent and latent. Examples of the patent ones are evidence of citizenship; educational qualifications; and nomination by, and membership of a political party. Latent ones include conviction for enumerated offenses, etc. For the patent ones, INEC is legally bound to ‘reject’ a candidate who fails (or whose party fails) to provide evidence that he possesses the qualification stipulated by law. As in the caption of this essay, notice that I did not say that INEC can legally ‘disqualify’, as such drastic measure still lies with the courts as we shall presently see in some instances, especially of the latent kinds.

Seven month pregnant daughter of Nassarawa state governor's campaign manager, Musa Illu, Amina Suleiman was on Monday Jan. 19th killed by unknown assailants at her husband's home in Katsina state. According to reports, Amina, whose husband was away to Zaria for his doctorate degree programme was found in the pool of her blood with her throat slit and a knife in her stomach. Younger brother to the campaign manager, Namairo Babai, while confirming the incident said her husband had tried to reach her on phone on the day of the attack but when he couldn't, he sent somebody to check on his wife only to be told she'd been killed.
