Suffering Escalates in Nigeria As N350 Tomatoes Now Sells For N3,500

The prices of tomatoes have gone up by 1,000 per cent in Jos and environs in Plateau, a market survey by NAN has shown. Our correspondents, who visited some of the markets and other selling points on Thursday, found out that the commodity had gone beyond the reach of the average Nigerian. At the Terminus Market in Jos, a small basket of the commodity, which used to be N350, was selling for N3,500.

Strike, Lose Your Wages, FG Tells Workers

The Federal Government has warned civil servants in the country not to participate in Wednesday’s nationwide indefinite strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress. A statement signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal warned civil servants against participating in the strike, adding that any worker who participated in the strike would not be entitled to his or her wage.

FG pays marketers N48.2bn 2015 subsidy arrears

  The Federal Government has paid oil marketers arrears of 2015 subsidy claims totaling N48.2 billion. The Ministry of Finance disclosed this, yesterday, in a statement by the Director of Press, Alhaji Salisu Naina,that the payment was made last week, to enable them import petroleum products and meet up their other financial needs.

EFCC seizes Fani-Kayode’s passport, detains ex-gov Yero

Fani Kayode The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has seized the passport belonging to a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, The PUNCH has learnt. The former minister, who served as the Director of Publicity of the Goodluck Jonathan during the 2015 presidential election, was arrested on Monday last week for receiving N840m. The money, which Fani-Kayode admitted to receiving, was said to have emanated from the account of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Saraki failed to declare N375m London property – Witness

Senate President, Bukola Saraki The first prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Mr. Michael Wetkas, told the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Tuesday that Saraki bought a property worth N375m in London in 2010 which he did not declare. Saraki is being prosecuted on 16 counts, including false and anticipatory asset declaration which he allegedly made when he was the governor of Kwara State between 2003 and 2007.

D’banj cancels endorsement deal with Ciroc

   Nigerian Artiste, Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo popularly known as D’banj says he will not renew his endorsement deal with Ciroc at the expiration of the present contract.  The artiste made the announcement on his instagram page, however, did not give more details for his decision. “D’banj has decided not to renew his @cirocnigeria endorsement,’’ it read. He showed a video of himself swaying to his new song while chilling in his pool with his cute dog.

Aisha Buhari doles out N55 million to parents of Chibok girls, Buni Yadi boys

Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja gave a N55 million cheque to parents of the kidnapped Chibok school girls and Buni Yadi school boys, who were slaughtered by Boko Haram in 2014. Aisha noted that the cash gift was a fulfillment of her earlier promise to give the proceeds from her book “Essentials of Beauty Therapy” to parents of the Boko Haram victims. She gave N30 million to parents of the Chibok girls and N25 million to parents of the Buni Yadi boys.

Power generation crashes to 1,400MW – TCN

The quantum of electricity generated in the country fell by over 1,000 megawatts within a space of eight hours on Tuesday. The Transmission Company of Nigeria stated that the generated electricity dropped by 1,018.5MW between 6am and 3pm. Data from the System Operator showed that the country generated 2,418.5MW of electricity as of 6am. But in a statement by the TCN around 3pm, the firm noted that the total power generation had dropped to 1,400MW.
