The organized labour has given Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state a 24-hour ultimatum to pay workers’ salary deductions or face industrial action. Vanguard reports that the ultimatum was contained in a statement that was jointly signed by Ade Adesanmi, the chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Odunayo Adesoye, the Trade Union Congress, Oladele Blessing, the secretary of Joint Negotiating Council, and issued on Tuesday, May 17. The leaders of the trade unions expressed regret over the delay in the payment of deductions despite the agreement reached with the state government at the stakeholders’ meeting on May 9.
“It must be noted that the state government has collected state allocation for the period of December, 2015, January, 2016, February and March, 2016 with internally generated revenue inclusive and yet government is running away from its responsibility on payment of workers’ monthly gross salary, which is far from our expectation from a worker friendly governor. “In view of this, we are constrained to request for the payment of the 2015 December workers’ deduction within 24 hours, so as to avoid industrial unrest in Ekiti state,” the statement read. The same day, Fayose issued a statement through his chief press secretary, dismissing rumours that his special adviser on political matters, Alhaji Ademola Bello, has been relieved of his position. The governor described the news as a blatant lie orchestrated by those who wanted to destabilize his administration.
“It is these same elements who few weeks back flied a fake news that the secretary to Ekiti state government, Dr Mrs Modupe Alade, had resigned whereas the woman had gone on two weeks leave‎. “We implored the people to ignore these people who are disturbed by the performance and ever growing popularity of Governor Ayodele Fayose,” the statement read in part. Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has unveiled a social investment package designed to impact on the lives of Nigerians. The presidency revealed that the government will pay N5000 monthly to one million extremely poor Nigerians for 12 months.
