Saraki begs Attorney General to discontinue forgery charges

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has been alleged to have pleaded with the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami to drop forgery charges against him and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, Saharareporters reports. The senate president was said to have met privately with the AGF at the premises of the Senate when Malami, accompanied by Ita Enang, President Muhammadu Buhari’s special assistant on the National Assembly, arrived to see Senator David Umaru, head of the Senate committee on the judiciary. A source at the Senate and another in the AGF’s office said that Saraki requested to see Malami after the AGF’s meeting with Senator Umaru.

Ogun State Government has announced the immediate removal of Ebenezer Olubena, Commissioner IV in the State Civil Service Commission, for acts of misconduct. A statement issued in Abeokuta on Wednesday by Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, said the removal was in accordance with extant laws. Olubena was directed to hand over all government property and documents in his possession. “Consequent upon this, Mr Olubena is hereby directed to hand over all government property and documents in his possession to the Permanent Secretary at the Commission immediately,” the statement added.

NFF said there is No agreement with NNPC on payment of Super Eagles’ coach,

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said on Wednesday that it did not reach any agreement with the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to sponsor the salaries of the incoming Super Eagles’ Head Coach. A statement by Ademola Olajire, NFF’s Assistant Director of Communications, said in Abuja that the report of the agreement in some sections of the media was just an imagination from the writers. The statement quoted Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande, the Chairman of the NFF Media and Publicity Committee as saying that the 1.5 million dollars reported to have been secured from the agreement was also untrue. “The story is the figment of the imagination of the writers; nobody in the NFF or NNPC discussed the matter of salary of Eagles’ Coach and there is no iota of truth in it.

The centre was jointly inaugurated by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Paul Arkwright and the Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau in Lagos on Wednesday. Dambazua said the centre was part of efforts to enhance service delivery and in line with global best practice in modern migration management. He said it was also in line with the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Nigeria and the United Kingdom on June 1, 2005.

Senate alleged forgery: My action is in public interest - AGF

  The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, has said that his decision to reopen the alleged case of 2015 Senate Standing Rules forgery was in public interest. Malami made this known when he appeared before the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters on Wednesday in Abuja to explain his role in the matter. He added that while the Senate had powers to regulate its procedures, the case was instituted because there was alleged breach of procedure. Court nullifies increment in electricity tariff

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday annulled the increment in the electricity tariff recently announced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission(NERC). Justice Mohammed Idris annulled the increment while delivering judgment in a suit filed by an human rights lawyer, Mr. Toluwani Yemi Adebiyi, against NERC and DISCO companies. The judge described NERC's action as procedurally ultra vires, irrational, irregular and illegal. Justice Idris, while relying on Sections 31, 32 and 76 of the Electricity Power Sector Reform Act(EPSRA) 2005, in deciding the substantive suit held that, "NERC acted outside the powers conferred on it by the Act and failed to follow the prescribed procedure.

Fashola highlights positive development from ongoing Azura Power Project

     As construction work progresses at the Azura Power Plant in Benin, Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has listed the positive spin-offs that would result from such projects across the country saying that current efforts by government to achieve incremental power would galvanize and boost the national economy. The Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN has explained that the alleged Senate forgery case filed by the federal government against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, predated his appointment as AGF. Saraki, Ekweremadu and two others are accused of forging the Senate Standing Rules 2015, with which their election into office as senate president and deputy senate president was carried out. Appearing on Wednesday before the Senator David Umaru-led Senator Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Malami stated that while he was appointed AGF in November 2015, the case was filed in July.

US crude stockpiles fall less than expected at 2.5 million barrels: EIA

Crude inventories fell by 2.5 million barrels in the last week, compared with analysts' expectations for a decrease of 3 million barrels. Crude stocks at the Cushing, Oklahoma, delivery hub fell by 232,000 barrels, the Energy Information Administration said. Distillate stockpiles, which include diesel and heating oil, rose by 4.1 million barrels, versus expectations for a 256,000-barrel increase, the EIA data showed. U.S. crude imports also fell last week by 522,000 bpd.

Charlotte Osei, EC Chairperson The Electoral Commission (EC) has given the assurance that it will delete names of other NHIS registrants whose names were not captured on the list of 56,000 presented to the Supreme Court. The Commission, on Tuesday indicated that, the names of the 56,000 voters who had been captured on the register with the National Health Insurance card as proof of Ghanaian citizenship, had been deleted in compliance with the Supreme Court’s order. But speaking at a press conference organized by the Commission on Wednesday, the Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Mr. Samuel Tetteh said “any other NHIS card registrant who is found apart from the list which was presented by the Supreme Court will also be deleted.”

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria has suspended its six-day strike after holding talks with the Federal Government and employers in the oil sector. The oil workers union called on its members nationwide to resume work with immediate effect after its National Executive Committee meeting. This comes after the Ministry of Labour and Employment and Ministry of Petroleum Resources held a two-day meeting with the leadership of the PENGASSAN, Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and employers and to address unresolved issues in the oil and gas industry.

Italian PM Renzi visits Puglia train crash site
