'He lived life the way he wanted': Robert De Niro, Cindy Crawford and Mike Tyson among members of John F. Kennedy Jr's inner circle to tell all about the former First Son in new documentary

John F. Kennedy Jr will be the subject of a new documentary examining his life that was tragically cut short.

The son of beloved US President John F. Kennedy died in July 1999 in a plane crash along with his wife Carolyn and sister-in-law Lauren Bessette.

The new documentary I Am JFK Jr will premiere on August 1 on Spike after being screened in select theaters starting on July 22.


The film features vintage footage of JFK Jr in the White House and clips of him in the years after his father's assassination.

It also includes interviews from his inner circle including Robert De Niro, Cindy Crawford, Mike Tyson and John Perry Barlow.

Barlow, 68, first met JFK Jr in 1978 and they later became close friends while living in New York City.

The political activist and former lyricist for the Grateful Dead often went on double dates with Kennedy and his then-girlfriend Daryl Hannah.



'He said, ''You know, I've been thinking. I mean, everybody expects me to be a great man. I wonder if it wouldn't be a much more interesting challenge if I couldn't make myself a good man'',' Barlow recalled of his friend.

Oprah Winfrey also was shown interviewing JFK Jr and asking him if he'd ever run for political office.

'There is this great weight of expectation and anticipation,' he replied.

In a trailer for the documentary DeNiro says: 'He lived the life the way he wanted to.'





The documentary also included interviews with TV journalists Christiane Amanpour and Chris Cuomo as well as his college roommates, close friends and colleagues from his pioneering magazine George.

Crawford was the cover model on the debut issue of the political magazine George with its tagline 'Not Just Politics As Usual'.

'I literally had the balls to become George Washington,' Crawford said during the documentary.
