Planes, ships chase new leads in search for flight MH-370

New satellite images have revealed more than 100 objects in the southern Indian Ocean that could be debris from a Malaysian jetliner missing for 18 days, while planes scouring the frigid seas on Wednesday also reported seeing potential wreckage. The latest sightings came as searchers stepped up efforts to find some trace of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, thought to have crashed on March 8 with the loss of all 239 people aboard after flying thousands of miles off course. "We have now had four separate satellite leads, from Australia, China and France, showing possible debris," Malaysian Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein told a news conference. "It is now imperative that we link the debris to MH370."

Ray J posted a photo of a woman on Instagram named  Tina Chastang . Under Tina’s picture, Ray J captioned, “I usually don’t go this hard but … This chick look exactly like a character on Planet of the Apes.” Fans quickly came to the aid of Chastang and Ray J begrudgingly removed the photo from Instagram. KADUNA BEGINS INTER-FAITH PEACE MOVES AFTER KILLINGS

The Kaduna State government yesterday began an inter-faith  peace building  initiative involving traditional rulers across the state following the recent killing of over 100 villagers in Kaura LGA. Traditional  rulers  from all the religions started a two-day retreat organized by the government at the Lugard Hall to devise a community-based security and peace-building method of addressing the  security problem  including killings and thefts. Over 100 villagers including  women and children  were murdered by gunmen recently. Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero said the retreat was part of a  multi dimensional approach to security and peace building. He decried the dangerous trend of wanton destruction of lives and property in the state in particular and the nation at large, saying it was high time to halt the ugly trend through collaborative efforts of stakeholders at all levels.

FIRE GUTS EKITI PDP SECRETARIAT

Part of the Ekiti State  secretariat  of the Peoples  Democratic Party  located on Ajilosun road,  Ado Ekiti , was gutted by fire yesterday. The incident, which came four days after the controversial primary election of the party, affected the upper part of the secretariat, with the chairman’s office badly damaged. Although the cause of the fire was still unknown at the time this  report  was filed, sources said the fire started at about 5.30am. Residents of the area said they had to raise the  alarm  when they noticed that the building was on fire.  When our correspondent visited the  office , he observed policemen station at the premises. The party is yet to issue a statement on the matter, but the state police spokesman, Victor Babayemi, said investigation has commenced. He said no arrest has been made, but assured that those behind the  incident  will be tracked down and made to face the law.  Meanwhile, the party has set up its governorship campaign team for the election.

Golden Eaglets begin screening

Abuja - Golden Eaglets coaching crew will begin the screening of new players that would defend the title won by Nigeria at the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2013 in the United Arab Emirates. The screening begins in Abuja on Thursday. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has finalized arrangement for the smooth take off of the usual grueling exercise at the practice pitch of the NFF/FIFA Goal Project Site. Team administrator, Tayo Egbaiyelo informed that players would be called up in batches in order to create an enabling environment for the coaching crew to pick the budding talents. Speaking ahead of the exercise, Golden Eaglets coach, Emmanuel Amuneke said he has combed the nooks and crannies of the country in the last one month to fish out some raw talents. The first batch of 35 players are due in camp on Wednesday (today) in order to commence the screening on Thursday.

Kendrick Lamar randomly came up in the murder trial against Oscar Pistorius yesterday (March 24). The Compton rapper's song "B*** Don't Kill My Vibe" was mentioned in text message evidence presented against Pistorius, currently accused of killing his girlfriend. The "Blade Runner" is on trial for gunning down Reeva Steenkamp last February. Prosecutors allege that Pistorius' explosive temper led to Steenkamp's murder, while the South African athlete claims he shot at her, believing she was a burglar. Pistorius and Steenkamp had apparently been arguing heavily leading up to her death. The fights were mostly over Pistorius being jealous. Fire guts CBN’s Lagos office, destroys assets worth millions of naira

Strange fire yesterday razed the Central  Bank of Nigeria  Head Office Annex located at Customs Street, Lagos. The incident which coincided with the first Monetary Policy Committee meeting chaired by acting Central Bank Governor, Dr Sarah Alade, created pandemonium around the Lagos Central Business District as  fire fighters  battled to put off the inferno. Though the cause of the fire which started at about 5.30pm could not be ascertained as at press time, indications were that damages on the ground and first floors of the building were phenomenal. The fire, it was learnt, started at the old building as workers were preparing to move documents and other sensitive items from the block into their newly constructed  head office  annex. The incident threw the whole area into confusion causing heavy human and vehicular traffic. N10bn suit: Court summons Sanusi over sale of Intercontinental Bank

Suspended Governor of the Central  Bank of Nigeria  (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, seems in for more trouble as a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered him to appear before it in a N10 billion suit filed by some aggrieved shareholders of defunct Intercontinental Bank of Nigeria. Ruling on an ex-parte application filed by Chris Uche on behalf of one Abdullahi Sani and two others, Justice Abdulramat Mohammed ordered the service of the originating summons on any adult in the office of the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on the  notice board  of the bank. The plaintiffs, in their originating summons, supported by a seven-paragraph affidavit wanted the court to determine whether the suspended CBN governor did not act fraudulently by deliberately strangulating the banking operations of  Intercontinental Bank  to the detriment of the plaintiffs as shareholders. Also joined in the suit are Central Bank of Nigeria and  Securities and Exchange  Commission (SEC) as 2nd and 3rd

South- East  governors met yesterday in Enugu to review the  participation  of representatives from the region at the ongoing  national conference . The Chairman of South-East Governors’ Forum and Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji, who briefed journalists after the meeting that lasted for over three hours, said that the report they got was that the representatives of the region were presently doing very well. The national conference kicked off in earnest on Monday as the confab’s members went on break after the inauguration. He said the South-East governors used the meeting to formally welcome Governor Willie Obiano into their fold after Chief Peter Obi left  office  on March 17. It was a bloody day for residents of Benue and Borno states yesterday when suspected Fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram killed 70 people, among them five policemen. The bloodbath came despite an appeal by Senate President  David Mark , Tuesday urging terrorists to stop the killings even as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). Mohammed Abubakar on Monday deployed four units of Mobile Force to Benue and other troubled spots in the North. At least, 60 people were killed in Agena Village of Mbaalom District of Gwer East  Local Government  Area of Benue State after gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen invaded the village in the early hours of yesterday. As at press time, remains of the dead were being moved to the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre in Makurdi where residents of the state capital trouped in their  large numbers  to behold the gory sight. Police, Ministry Deny Receiving Sanusi’s N19.7 Billion CBN Grant

The  Inspector General  of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar and the Ministry of Police Affairs have both denied ever receiving a N19.7 Billion from suspended Governor of the Central  Bank of Nigeria , CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi for  Police Equipment . Sanusi in his defense of the allegation of financial recklessness leveled against him by the  Financial Reporting Council , FRC, had said N19.7 Billion was released to the Ministry of Police Affairs for the purchase of a Helicopter and other  security equipment  for the Police. According to Sanusi in his defense, “consistent with our policy of development, upon the instruction of His Excellency, the President, the CBN intervened by paying N19.7bn to the Ministry of Police Affairs for the purchase of armoured helicopters and other security equipment.”

I Did Not Say NNPC Withheld N10 Billion From Federation Account-Jonathan

President Goodluck  Jonathan  has denied confirming that $10 Billion has been withheld from the Federation Account by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation , NNPC, describing the publications in some domestic media as “false and a distortion.” A statement signed by Presidential Spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati also said at no time did the president confirmed any irregularities in NNPC. The statement reads: “Reports in some domestic media today which quoted President Goodluck Jonathan as “confirming” in Amsterdam that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) wrongly withheld $10 Billion from the federation account  are completely false and a total distortion of the President’s comments during his meeting with the Nigerian community in the Netherlands.

Violence, rains stoke food supply fears

Nigeria is facing a possible  food supply  crisis this farming season, traders say, as the agricultural sector grapples with a predicted shorter rainy season, sectarian violence and greater demand from Niger. Food experts have raised the alarm after the country's meteorological agency said this year's  rainy season  could be shorter than usual, compounding a likely fall in production due to insecurity. Nigeria's agricultural  sector  is heavily dependent on the rains, with the bulk of its produce cultivated in the north and central region.

Police demobilize bomb in Kaduna

The  police  in Kaduna on Tuesday said they had successfully demobilized a suspected bomb in Kaduna. The Police  Public Relation  Officer in the command, Aminu Lawan, who announced this to newsmen in Kaduna, said that the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detonated at about 10:30. Lawan said that the command was alerted at about 10:00 that a young motorcyclists dropped a  polythene bag  containing an IED at Kashim Ibrahim Road, along Sultan Road, Ungwan Sarki, Kaduna North Local Government Area.

Ibadan kidnappers’ Den: Man Arrested with 25 Human Tongues

AS the uproar over the discovery of a kidnappers’ den at Soka area, Ibadan, Oyo State, is yet to die down, 25 pieces of items suspected to be human tongues were found in the possession of a ‘madmad’ at Oluyole area of the capital city. We gathered that one of two other ‘madman’ suspected to be working with the one arrested was mobbed to death while the other one was seriously injured and was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for medical treatment. Since the unearthing of the kidnappers’ den last Saturday, residents of Ibadan had decided to take their fate in their own hands as they turned themselves to vigilantes going around on the lookout for those they suspected of pretending to be mad people. Their efforts led to the different discoveries on Tuesday.
