Though hard to believe, the mother-of-one revealed that quit smoking three years ago so as to stay alive for her only daughter, Rolari. Yeni said: “Before my daughter went into the university, I used to smoke and suffer chest pains. I was like ‘if I continue smoking I may die before my daughter graduates’. “That was the inspiration I needed to stop smoking because for years, I had been telling myself that I would stop smoking on the first day of January, but by January 4 I was still smoking.

WHO director for Africa begins 3-day visit to Nigeria on Monday

  Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, is expected to begin a three-day official visit to Nigeria on Monday, a statement has said. The statement, issued by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, in Abuja, said Moeti’s visit was at the invitation of the Federal Government. Adewole said that the objective of the visit was to strengthen the collaboration between WHO and Nigeria. He said during the visit, Moeti would hold discussions with senior government officials and key stakeholders on health development in Nigeria and the African region.

Nigeria U-20 men’s team the Flying Eagles defeated Sudan 2-1 in the first leg, final round of the 2017 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Sunday. Sudan took the lead in the 27th minute in Omdurman before Samuel Chukwueze drew the Flying Eagles level on 67 minutes. And in the 86th minute Victor Osimhen secured the win for the Flying Eagles. The return leg comes up in Nigeria in two weeks time.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by the Police to carry out mass arrest in the state on Monday. The Governor said on Sunday that the Police have begun indiscriminate arrest of top officials of the government, leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as well as members of the State House of Assembly. The mass arrest, which he said would begin on Monday, according to him, is based on petitions alleged to have been written against him by the All Progressives Congress (APC) over governorship election conducted in the state in 2014.

ESPN Portugal was a big underdog against host-nation France in the final of the European championship and their hopes took a huge blow early in the match as Cristiano Ronaldo had to be replaced after injuring his knee. The injury came in just the eighth minute of the match as Dimitri Payet's hard challenge on Ronaldo resulted in the players' knees colliding. Ronaldo immediately went down grabbing in his left knee. Replays showed that Ronaldo's knee seems to buckle during the collision.

 Police say more than 120 officers were injured and 86 demonstrators have been detained during leftist riots in the German capital which police call "the most aggressive and violent protests in the last five years." Berlin police said in a statement Sunday that protesters threw bottles, cobblestones and fireworks, destroyed cars and attacked officers. It wasn't immediately clear how serious the injuries were, or how many rioters were injured in the clashes.

Gunfire from "heavy weaponry" was exchanged outside a United Nations building on the outskirts of South Sudan's capital Juba on Sunday, in fresh violence after a day of relative calm, the U.N. mission to the country said. The mission sent out a series of tweets at about 8:25 a.m. (1:25 a.m. ET) describing "gunshots" and a "heavily armed exchange" outside a U.N. compound.

NDA militants Claim Responsibility For Agip Pipeline Attack

The militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), has claimed responsibility for the blowing up of Italian oil installation Eni, also known as Agip oil company in Bayelsa State. The explosion, now known to be a bomb, occurred on Friday. In the early morning hours of Friday multiple explosions rocked the Nembe 1, 2, 3, lines and Tebedaba Brass trunk line in Bayelsa State and Rivers State. An NDA statement found on its website, authored by NDA Spokesman Mudoch Agbinibo, said “At about the of 3am to 5am the Niger Delta Avengers blowup Nembe 1, 2, 3 and Tebedaba brass trunk-line in Bayelsa/River States.”

PENGASSAN to dialogue with FG tomorrow

Chinese government data shows consumer prices in June rose at the slowest pace in six months, suggesting the world's second-largest economy is still experiencing weak consumer demand amid a broad downturn. The National Bureau of Statistics said Sunday China's consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.9 percent in June from a year earlier. Although the rate was slightly above analyst expectations, it remained far below the 3 percent target set by Chinese officials for 2016 and offers the central bank flexibility to enact a new round of stimulus in the latter half of the year.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has given President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration two weeks to open talks with its “Reach out to ‘Aaron Team’ or face consequences. MEND also responded to a recent piece titled ‘President Buhari sharpens focus on Niger Delta’, authored by Garba Shehu, presidential assistant on media and publicity. Garba had lambasted the Niger Delta Avengers for “killing soldiers and policemen, kidnapping and killing of oil company workers and asking oil companies to stop operations and pack out of the Niger Delta region”.

Iraq government forces retake key air base from ISIS

Iraqi government forces on Saturday recaptured an air base in northern Iraq from ISIS, a victory hailed by the prime minister as a key step ahead of the long-awaited operation to push the militants from the northern city of Mosul. In a statement issued on his website, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi described the air base in the town of Qayara as an “important base to liberate Mosul” and called on the city’s residents “to get ready for the liberation of their areas.”

Australia’s prime minister said on Sunday that his conservative coalition government was re-elected for a second three-year term, after a chaotic national election that left the country in a state of political paralysis for more than a week. Officials had scrambled to sort out who had won the tight race. Vote counting was still underway from the July 2 ballot, but Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said his conservative Liberal Party-led coalition had secured a victory, and that opposition leader Bill Shorten had called him earlier to congratulate him on being re-elected.

Gunfire in the capital erupted outside the presidential palace at around 4:20pm on Friday as President Salva Kiir had been holding a meeting to discuss a previous clash in which five government soldiers were killed the day before.
