Obasanjo uses London book launch to lambast though questioning Buhari's O'Levels

FORMER president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has attacked all those criticising the academic credentials of All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate General Muhammadu Buhari saying it is an insult to the Nigerian military. Speaking in London yesterday during the launch of his book My Watch, Chief Obasanjo said that when he joined the army, it was mandatory that every applicant must have O'Levels in the form of West African School Certificate or General Certificate of Education before enlisting. According to Chief Obasanjo, the requirements were the same when General Buhari joined the army in 1961.

Speaking during an interview on Cable News Network (CNN) Buhari said Obasanjo was highly respected in the country and therefore his endorsement was likely to help APC gain more support from Nigerians. "It [the endorsement] will certainly bring more supporters to us and more confidence again to us from those who are sitting on the fence because general Obasanjo is highly respected and as far as the Nigerian nation is concerned, there is no serious issue that can be discussed without people seeking for his opinion and listening to it," said Buhari. According to The Nation , Jonathan, who was speaking during the Presidential Media Chat monitored by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), rubbished suggestions that he won't handover power if he loses, saying the insinuations were "unnecessary and unfortunate". The country goes to vote on 28 March after the elections were delayed by six weeks due to security concerns.

President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday clarified what he meant by stealing is not corruption, saying he was quoted out of context. Responding to questions during a presidential media chat on Wednesday, the President explained that the remark flowed from a discussion he had with a former chief justice of the federation, who told him of how he had to distinguish straight acts of stealing from other forms of corruption he acted upon.

NNPC insists no money is missing

Abuja - The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Wednesday said that the report of the forensic audit carried out on its books by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) did not indict it in anyway. The Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr Joseph Dawha, said at a news conference in Abuja that the report, rather, absolved NNPC of culpability on all counts. The managing director, who was clarifying the highlights of the PwC forensic audit report, expressed joy at the successful completion of the exercise.

NIS Recovers 191 PVCs From Foreigners

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has seized 191 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from foreigners in Sokoto, Jigawa and Zamfara states, as part of efforts to ensure that non-Nigerians do not participate in the general elections, a statement by the agency said. According to the statement issued by Chukwuemeka Obua, the Public Relations Officer of NIS, in Abuja yesterday, the service also recovered 57 Temporary Voter Cards (TVCs), 367 old national identity cards and 11 old TVC slips from the foreigners. 68 new national identity cards, 10 birth certificates and three NIS registration certificates were also recovered.

Obanikoro Sues Premium Times, Sahara Reporters

Former Defence Minister, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has dragged online newspapers, Sahara Reporters and Premium Times before a Lagos High Court for defamation of character. Joined in the suit are Punch Newspapers Ltd., Omoyele Sowore, Publisher of Sahara Reporters and Festus Owete, General Editor at Premium Times. The defendants had published an audio recording of Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, purportedly in a conversation with other individuals to rig the Ekiti State gubernatorial election, an allegation Obanikoro and others have denied.
