Nigeria army ‘knows where Boko Haram are holding girls’

The Nigerian military say they know where the girls kidnapped by Boko Haram are but they will not attempt a rescue. Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff said it was “good news for the parents,” although he admitted the military would not risk “going there with force.” More than 200 girls were abducted by Boko Haram gunmen from their school in northern Nigeria in April. Earlier, the BBC learned that a deal to release some of the girls was close but was called off by the government. The BBC’s Will Ross in Abuja says an intermediary met leaders of the Islamist group and visited the place where they were being held.

Boko Haram can’t stop 2015 election says Jonathan

In spite of the ongoing security challenges in parts of the country, President Goodluck Jonathan has re-assured Nigerians that elections would hold next year as scheduled. This was just as he described the  abduction of schoolgirls in Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State as a major dent on the nation’s security.  He said however, that these indeed were signs that Nigeria was facing challenges of evil forces but nothing was impossible for God to do. Speaking during the 2014 Democracy Day Interdenominational Church Service with the theme, “Love The Lord…and your Neighbour” held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, the President said: “We have been witnessing terror attacks for two years plus, but the Chibok incident has added a major dent to the security of the country. There is nothing God cannot do. With your prayers, our girls will be seen by our security personnel.”

Five dead in first Sierra Leone Ebola outbreak

Five people died in Sierra Leone's first confirmed outbreak of Ebola virus, according to the World Health Organization.The death toll from the epidemic in West Africa reaches 190,despite regional officials’ claims that it has been brought under control. "I can categorically confirm that the Ebola sickness has materialized,"  health ministry official Amara Jambai said on Monday. "Preliminary information received from the field indicates that one laboratory-confirmed case and five community deaths have been reported from Koindu chiefdom,"  the World Health Organization (WHO) also said in a statement on its website. This chiefdom shares a border with the current Ebola virus disease hotspot Guéckédou in Guinea. Several suspected cases of Ebola, a haemorrhagic fever with a fatality rate of up to 90 percent, were earlier registered in Sierra Leone, but they tested negative. Yobo, Osaze given hearty welcome

Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo and striker Osaze Odemwingie were warmly welcomed back by the rest of the squad when they reported to camp on Sunday. Osaze has spent nearly two years away from the squad, while Yobo has not been back since the African Nations Cup win in 2013. But both players were overwhelmed by the reception from team-mates. “I am humbled and I pray that I will justify the confidence reposed in me,” he said. Osaze spoke in a similar vein, adding that it was a family reunion that is bound to affect the fortunes of the team at the World Cup. “We will do our best in Brazil to justify this unity that we have in camp.”

US doctor shot dead in Pakistan

An American volunteer cardiologist was shot dead in Pakistan on Monday, a member of his minority Ahmadi community said, in the latest attack on a group that says it is Muslim but whose religion is rejected by the state. Mehdi Ali Qamar had taken his wife, young son and a cousin to a graveyard in Punjab province at dawn to pray when he was shot, said Salim ud Din, a spokesperson for the Ahmadi community. "He came here just one or two days ago to work at our heart hospital, to serve humanity and for his country," Din said. "Two persons came on motorbikes. They shot 11 bullets in him." Qamar was born in Pakistan but moved abroad in 1996. He had returned to do voluntary work at a state-of-the-art heart hospital built by the Ahmadi community in the eastern town of Rabwah. Qamar, aged 50, moved to Columbus, Ohio, in the United States, where he founded an Ahmadi centre and raised funds for medical charities in Pakistan, Din said. NERC increases electricity tariff, retains N750 fixed charge

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Monday announced an increase in electricity tariff by between N1 and N5. NERC Chairman, Dr Sam Amadi, told a news conference in Abuja said that the new tariff would take effect from June 1 as provided for in the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO). He said with the review, most electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) will retain the N750 fixed charge. He said that the MYTO provides for bi-annual reviews that take effect on June 1 and Dec. 1 to ensure that some critical and financial variables underlying electricity tariff in Nigeria were realistic, fair and current. Amadi said the variables that determined the methodical reviews included rate of inflation, exchange rate, gas price and available power generation capacity in the country. Amadi also said that the new tariffs would not be equally served to consumers nationwide.
