The OAP star said this year's crop of singers were a load of s*** but it was just a joke. You just can't Help Yourself can you Sir Tom?

Sir Tom Jones made an embarrassing faux pas at The Voice launch day when he described this year’s crop of singers as “s***”.

That’s the team of singers he will be mentoring for the next three months.

The show’s four judges were asked to describe the standard of this year’s talent as they introduced a screening of the first episode of the new series of the show.

As will.i.am began to say something in reply, Tom, 74, quipped: “S***.”

He was asked to clarify his comments and, frankly, made the situation worse by adding: “It just slipped out. I hope it wasn’t a Freudian slip.”

Later, one of the show’s team led Tom back with his tail between his legs to “clear up the confusion”.

This time, as fellow panellists will.i.am, Rita Ora and Kaiser Chief’s frontman Ricky Wilson, 36, looked on, Tom said: “When I said what the talent was like this year, I said ‘s***’ because I like to joke. Then I said I hope it’s not a Freudian slip. Well, that was a joke on top of a joke. It was not a Freudian slip.”

At another point in the launch day, Black Eyed Peas star will, 39, spoke openly about The Voice’s failure to produce a star with the winner of the show – and he reckons he has the answer.

Why why why? Sir Tom

“The reason why is because… I’m going to get in trouble,” he started – but then he said it anyway.

“Something’s missing. Take, for example, the Black Eyed Peas and Rita. We are artists who have record deals, and there is someone that’s making sure that we finish our projects. It’s a project manager.

“What I’ve realised for this show is that the format is a great format, the concept is the best concept out of all the freakin’ shows. And Universal’s an amazing label.

“But because when the show goes off, there isn’t songs ready for people to sing, in the time it takes you to record those songs, people’s attention spans have gone.” Rita, 24, added: “There’s nobody focused on what the artist is doing when you’re in the middle of doing a TV show. Nobody knows who the artist is.”

Will added that he is not volunteering to be the project manager due to “politics”.

Check out the new series, where the talent is s*** and there’s no project manager to oversee them, starting this Saturday at 7pm on BBC1. (Just joking – it’s actually a very good episode and well worth watching.)
