Google creates self-driving car controlled by computers and with no steering wheel or pedals

The internet giant's car uses sensors and computing power to assess the surroundings and is intended to "transform mobility" 

Google is building a car without a steering wheel.

Sergey Brin, co-founder of the technology titan, told a Southern California tech conference that Google will make 100 prototype cars that drive themselves - and therefore do not need a wheel. Or brake and accelerator pedals.

Instead, there are buttons for go and stop.

A combination of sensors and computing power takes the driving from there.

Chris Urmson, director of the project to build the car, said: "We're really excited about this vehicle - it's something that will allow us to really push the capabilities of self-driving technology and understand the limitations."

He added that the car could "improve people's lives by transforming mobility."

To date, Google has driven hundreds of thousands of miles on public roads with Lexus SUVs and Toyota Priuses outfitted with the special equipment.

This prototype is the first Google will has built for itself.

It will not be for sale, and Google is unlikely to go deeply into car manufacturing.

In a blog post, the company emphasised partnering with other firms.
