Armed officers are carrying out searches following reports of a 'young man in full combat clothing carrying rifle'

Police have released an image of a man they are looking for who is wearing camouflage gear and appears to be carrying a firearm.

Chief Inspector Chris Spinks said: "Public safety is paramount and we take all reports of firearms seriously. This was a dynamic incident where a number of police resources were immediately deployed to carry out enquiries and conduct area searches.


"The man was not reported to be acting in a threatening way or making any threats to the public and we have had no further reports during the course of the operation.

"Our enquiries therefore now continue to identify this man and determine the nature of this incident.

"We thank the members of the public who promptly called police and would ask anyone with any further information about this incident to contact police on 101.”

Taxi driver 'saw man in full combat carrying rifle'

A taxi driver who witnessed the young man carrying a firearm has spoken to the Easter Daily Press.

He said: "I saw a man in the full combat clothing carrying a rifle in his right hand.

"I wasn’t sure if it was an imitation but I thought it was a bit strange."

He says he captured footage of the man on his mobile phone and showed it to police.

Armed police and helicopter on scene

The heavy police presence has caused some alarm for locals arriving at work this morning.

A number of armed officers have arrived in the Whitefriars area of Norwich city centre and the force helicopter is circling overhead.

Police say the search continues.

Reports of 'young man in full camouflage clothing with firearm'

Armed police in Norwich are responding to reports of a man wearing combat gear and carrying a rifle.

Norfolk police confirmed they were called this morning to reports of a man seen with a firearm near Norwich market.

Officers were called to the Whitefriars area of the city shortly after 8.30am following a number of reports of a young man believed to be carrying a firearm.

The man was white and reported to be wearing full camouflage clothing.

A number of police resources including local patrol officers, armed response units and the police helicopter were deployed to carry out area searches and conduct pro-active enquires. No arrests have been made.

Armed police units have been stood down but remain in the area as enquiries continue.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Norfolk Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

'Our focus is locating the individual' - police

Norfolk Police have had no sightings of the man since they responded to a number of calls at around 8.30am.

There have been no suggestions of a threat to public safety.

A spokesman for the force said the focus of the operation remains on locating the man.

Once he is found, officers can determine the nature of what has happened.

Police urge man to come forward



Norfolk Police have urged the man who has sparked the incident to come forward and speak to police.

Video footage has emerged of the man in camouflage which has prompted the police response.

Taken from inside a vehicle, the man can be seen wearing full army gear and boots and is walking purposefully down the busy road.

He appears to be holding a large rifle.

Norfolk Police have urged calm, emphasising that there have been no reports of the man threatening any member of the public.
