Old sins, they say, have long shadows. This wise saying may have been responsible for the suspension yesterday, of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). A statement from the presidency, which announced his suspension, had accused him of “financial recklessness and misconduct, which are inconsistent with the administration’s vision of a Central Bank propelled by the core values of focused economic management, prudence, transparency and financial discipline.” The statement adds: “Being also deeply concerned about far-reaching irregularities under Mallam Sanusi’s watch, which have distracted the Central Bank away from the pursuit and achievement of its statutory mandate; and being determined to urgently reposition the Central Bank of Nigeria for greater efficiency, respect for due process and accountability, President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered the immediate suspension of Sanusi.”

 Ukraine's President and opposition leaders agreed Friday to a deal meant to end the country's political crisis and end bloody fighting that has left parts of the  city center  a war zone. President Viktor Yanukovych, opposition leaders and representatives of the  European Union  signed the deal Friday afternoon after a night of difficult negotiations that stretched well into the day. "Good compromise for Ukraine. Gives peace a chance. Opens the way to reform and to Europe," Polish  Foreign Minister  Radoslaw Sikorski said on Twitter before the signing was completed.

Foremost  search engine , Google, on Friday announced that three Nigerians had made it to the top 10 finalists in its “Africa Connected” competition. In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, Google said the three Nigerian finalists were Eric Obuh, a social crusader; Eseoghene Odiete, a  fashion designer , and Mayowa Adegbile, a philanthropist. It said the top 10 finalists also include two Kenyans, a Senegalese, a South African, a Zimbabwean and a Ghanaian. Five successful winners from among the finalists would now be selected by the online voting public. According to Google, the winners would go home with $25,000 (N4,065,000) each and would also have the opportunity to work with a Google sponsor over a six-month period, to further their  online businesses . Godwin Emefiele Not much is known about the Group Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer , Zenith Bank Plc, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, who has been nominated by President Goodluck Jonathan to succeed Mr. Lamido Sanusi as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in June. This is apparently because of his little public profile. Emefiele is an economic and  finance professional  with experience in banking and academics. His calm demeanour bodes well for the role of an economic manager and bank regulator, according to analysts. A Lagos  High Court  in Ikeja has sentenced to death Akolade Arowolo for the murder of his banker wife, Titilayo, who he repeatedly stabbed to death at their residence in Isolo, Lagos, on June 24, 2011. Justice Lateefat Okunnu, in her judgment on Friday, held that even though there was no eyewitness to the incident, the circumstantial evidence adduced by the prosecution had proved the murder charge against the convict beyond all  reasonable doubt . “I pronouce the defendant guilty and accordingly sentenced to death,” the court held. Okunnu relied on the testimony of the  forensic pathologist , Prof. John Obafunwa, who testified that there were at least 76 stab wounds found on the deceased. Contrary to the convict’s claim during trial, Obafunwa had testified that the injuries must have been caused by sharp weapon applied on the deceased could not have been self-inflicted.
