Oscar Pistorius made a secret nine minute phone call to an ex-girlfriend shortly before he killed Reeva Steenkamp, it emerged today.

The Olympian called Jenna Edkins, who was stored in his mobile under the name “Babyshoes”.

The new evidence was uncovered by South African journalists and will shortly be revealed in a new book.

Police did not discover the information.

Mobile phone data showed Pistorius was on the phone when he arrived home that evening.

Further investigations have revealed that the number was used by Edkins but had been registered in her father’s name.

It appears police investigators did not make this connection.

Jenna was never questioned by the authorities and she never gave them a statement.

The prosecution has declined to comment on how this potential piece of evidence was missed.

The defence has also not responded to questions.

Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide for the Valentine’s Day shooting last month and will be sentenced on 13 October.

Experts on the South African legal system today said the Paralympian may avoid a jail term because he's a first time offender.

The sentence for culpable homicide is at the discretion of the judge - but it could be just a fine or as much as 15 years inside.

Pistorius, 27, fired four shots through his bathroom door, killing 29-year-old Reeva on Valentine’s Day last year.

Sentences for manslaughter in South Africa can vary from 20 years behind bars to fines and community service – known there as correctional supervision.

As well as manslaughter, the Blade Runner was also found guilty of negligence with a gun.
