Instagram is celebrating passing the 400 million user milestone

It’s official, the number of Instagram users has passed 400 million – more than the population of the US and UK combined.

At least 100 million of those users signed up in the last nine months, three-quarters of whom live outside the US and more than half live in Europe and Asia.

The milestone means Instagram has comfortably surpassed Twitter in popularity, which had 316 million users this year, according to its website.

Instagram was started by Kevin Systrom and Mike Kreiger in October 2010.

By April 2012 the San Francisco-based firm had reached more than 100 million active users and was bought by Facebook for one billion dollars (£669m).

In a blog post announcing the milestone, the company said: “We are thrilled to announce that the Instagram community has grown to more than 400 million strong. While milestones like this are important, what really excites us is the way that visual communication makes the world feel a little bit smaller to every one of us.

“When Instagram launched nearly five years ago, 400 million seemed like a distant dream. Now, we continue to strive to improve Instagram – helping you experience the world through images and connect with others through shared passions.”
