Saraki denies 13-count corruption charges

Senate President Bukola Saraki has described as frivolous and mischievous the 13-count corruption charges levelled against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau.
In his first reaction to news of the corruption charges, the number three citizen described the latest development as desperate attempts by his detractors to remove him from office at all costs.

In charge number ABT/01/15, dated September 11 and filed before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Saraki is accused of offences ranging from anticipatory declaration of assets, false declaration of assets in forms he filed before the Code of Conduct Bureau while he was governor of Kwara state.

According to the charges, the Senate president is also accused of failing to declare some assets he acquired while in office as governor between 2003 and 2011.

He is also accused of operating foreign accounts while being a public officer – governor and senator. He is expected to be charged before the tribunal this week.

But speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Saraki wondered why the charges were coming up 12 years after he left office as governor.

While saying that he would defend himself at the tribunal, he maintained his innocence, saying he declared his assets as governor and senator.

He said: “There is no doubt about it that it is mischievous. The issues there are not true; as far as we are concerned we are not shaking. We will focus and do what we have come here to do; we were elected by the people, elected by my colleagues to work for the interest of the country.”
