Who Will Die In Game Of ThronesSeason 6?

Season 6 is already teasing a huge death, so who will it be?

On Game of Thrones, only two words matter: valar morghulis. A High Valyrian proverb, meaning “all men must die,” valar morghulis encapsulates the entire series. When it comes to Game of Thrones, no one is safe. (Also, no one is truly dead until their severed head ends up on a pike, right Jon Snow?) So it’s not really a wise idea to get attached to any one character, Stark or otherwise.


The latest teaser trailer for Season 6 plays right into those fears. In it, set inside the House of Black and White in Braavos, we see the faces of the fallen — Ned Stark, Catelyn Stark, Robb Stark, Joffrey Baratheon, and Jon Snow* — before zeroing in on an ominous shot of six faces we know to be very much alive. At least, for now. (*For what it’s worth, this writer is not convinced that Jon Snow’s time in Westeros is up. R+L=J will no be in vain, George R.R. Martin! Also, Jon is the only character with a front row view of the coming snowmageddon promised by the White Walkers, so he’s too important to die.)

Is Game of Thrones simply trolling us, or is a major death(s) in the pipeline for Season 6? In the past, we’ve referred to Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series for an indication of the horrors to come. However, now that the scripted series has caught up to the last published book, showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff can go rogue — with a rough outline from Martin of course.

While we can’t use Melisandre’s magic to look into the future, we can assume that Game of Thrones will throw at least one major death our way in Season 6. So let’s take a look at some of our favorite characters and assess the likelihood of their deaths.

Lord Varys

Next to Littlefinger, the Cockroach of Westeros, Varys is the slyest character on Game of Thrones. He’s always three steps ahead of everyone else vying for the Iron Throne. Not only did Varys show up in Meereen out of nowhere, but it’s entirely likely that he had something to do with the Sons of the Harpy attack on Dany. (If so, he better hope Grey Worm doesn’t catch wind of that.) With Meereen on the brink of civil war, Tyrion has to lean on Varys to maintain order. Once again, Varys has put himself in a position of power. It’s only a matter of time before the pendulum starts to swing the other way. Imagine if Tyrion had figure this shit out on his own. Sounds pretty compelling, right?

Tommen Baratheon

Last season, a young Cersei Lannister encountered a fortune teller who told her that she would one day be queen. That’s nice, right? Well, she also told Cersei that her children would be doomed. The fortune teller said, “Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds.” To recount, Joffrey died in Season 4 and Myrcella died at the end of last season after being poisoned by Ellaria Sand. So, poor Tommen’s days might just be numbered. With Myrcella, Stannis, and Shireen all dead, the Iron Throne just might turn into a free-for-all.

Loras Tyrell

In the books, Loras is gravely injured in a siege, and it’s unclear whether he’s still alive or not. On the show, however, Loras has been arrested in King’s Landing by the Faith Militant for his homosexuality. He’s set to stand a full trial before the gods in Season 6, and honestly, we don’t see this working out in House Tyrell’s favor.

Theon Greyjoy

It almost seems fitting to think that Sansa’s only companion would meet a grisly end in Season 6. Now, in A Song of Ice and Fire, Theon ends up being captured by Stannis Baratheon. With Stannis currently dead in the Game of Thrones cannon, we don’t see that happening anytime soon. With Theon and Sansa currently on the run from Ramsay, we wouldn’t be surprised if they attempted to flee to the Iron Islands. But there’s no way Theon gets to play the hero. Redemption doesn’t exist in Game of Thrones. Sorry, Reek.

Ellaria Sand

Ellaria’s actions in the Season 5 finale ultimately guaranteed a war between the Lannisters and the Martells, and knowing Cersei, she’s going to be out for Ellaria’s blood. The last we saw of our favorite Westeros wino, she had partnered up with Gregor Clegane, who swore to remain totally silent until he’d slain all of Cersei’s enemies. Might Ellaria’s name be at the top of that list?
