Anyone that's ever regretted a message after sending it is about to be saved by one of WhatsApp's biggest rivals .

The private messaging app Telegram has just launched a new feature allowing people to edit messages after they've been delivered.

It could convince many people to make the switch from Facebook-owned WhatsApp which is currently the world's most popular messaging service.

"Starting today, you can edit the text of your messages after sending them," Telegram announced on its blog .

"This works across all Telegram chats, including groups and one-on-one conversations."

All you have to do to edit a message is to tap and hold on it and then press "edit". If you're using Telegram on a desktop computer, press on the up arrow to change what you wrote.

Messages that are edited will display a small "edited" label so you can see when and where you made your revisions.

WhatsApp doesn't allow you to edit messages, although it has recently introduced end-to-end encryption (something Telegram already offered) as well as a new desktop version.

According to Telegram, its numbers are growing quickly. It now has 100 million monthly active users, with 350,000 new users signing up every day, delivering 15 billion messages daily.

And if it continues to add useful new features like this one, that number is only going to go up.
