NFF appoint Yusuf as head coach

The Nigeria Football Federation has named Salisu Yusuf as the Super Eagles' chief coach and will continue to look for a technical advisor.

This comes after an embarrassing three days during which the federation named Paul Le Guen despite not agreeing to terms first.



It is unclear how the two roles are to be defined (but one must remember that both former Nigeria coaches Clemens Westerhof and Jo Bonfrere, among Nigeria’s most successful coaches, had the official title of technical adviser) and what the chain of command will look like between the TA and Yusuf [above]

Bitrus Berwang [below] will hold the temporary TA position till a permanent one is found.



The federation's executive committee met yesterday and approved both appointments. A later statement from the NFF said it had "no issue with Le Guen saying he is not coming; as several highly-qualified persons would be happy to coach Nigeria."

Sunday Oliseh was the Super Eagles' last permanent coach before he quit in February in a nasty row over his contract and relationship breakdown between him and the federation.

Nigeria have tumble to their worst ranking on the Fifa ladder in decades ( 14th in Africa, 70th in the world) and failed to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Gabon.

However they are still in the final round of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia in a group that is without a doubt the toughest in Africa.

There they have been drawn in Group B where they will face Algeria, the top-ranked side in Africa, Cameroon, as well as Zambia.Yusuf in the mean time is batting 100 percent as coach having won both games ( Mali and Luxembourg) where he held the coach's whistle.
