Rivers United in car crash



Players and officials of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club Rivers United were involved in an accident on Thursday.

The accident occurred at around 8pm in Ndele, Rivers State as the team made its way back from a Federation Cup game against Enyimba in Ibadan on Thursday.

No less than four of the team’s players suffered varying degrees of injuries.

The affected players include Yusuf Jaiyeola, Sope Hameed, Sunday Rotimi and Festus Austin .

Club secretary Ahmed Abdulrahman, who confirmed the sad development to supersport.com, explained that the accident was caused by a drunk driver who was driving against traffic along the East West Road.

“The accident was caused by a driver who was driving against traffic at full speed.

“He was very drunk as we were later informed by police officers who visited the scene of the accident to investigate what happened.

“The accident happened at full speed but we are happy no one died,” he said.

Rivers United currently sits in third place on the NPFL standings, three points adrift of the joint leaders, Wikki Tourists and Enugu Rangers.
