Sanusi’s return to CBN unlikely as Senate screens Emefiele Wednesday

The era of Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) may effectively be over in less than 48 hours if plans by the Senate to screen his successor sails through.
This is because barring any change in plan, the Upper Chamber will screen President Goodluck Jonathan’s nominee and Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank Plc, Mr. Godwin Emefiele on Wednesday.
An earlier scheduled screening scheduled for last Thursday as published on Senate’s Notice Paper, failed to hold as the absence of Senate President David Mark and Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN) scuttled the executive.
it was however, gathered that the Senate may ditch the standing convention and screen Emefiele in the Committee of the Whole (he would appear before the Senate at plenary) and on live television and if confirmed, “he will have to wait till the tenure of the incumbent is over before he resumes office.” Sanusi’s tenure is expected to end in June.

Before Senate could commence the screening and eventual confirmation, the Senate Leader is expected to move a motion to that effect, to be followed also, by the screening and confirmation of Adelabu Adebayo Adekola as Deputy Governor of the apex bank as nominated by the President.
Tagged, “Confirmation of nomination”, the motion to be moved by Sen. Ndoma-Egba as contained in the Senate Notice Paper reads:
“That the Senate do consider the request of Mr. President for the confirmation of the following nominees for appointments as Governor of the CBN and Deputy Governor of the CBN respectively, in accordance with section 8(1) and (2) of the CBN Act of 2007.”
In nominating Emefiele to the Senate for confirmation in February, Jonathan said: “In view of the fact that the tenure of the current Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Nigeria (CBN) will end on June 1, 2014, and pursuant to the provisions section 8(1) and (2) of the CBN Act, 2007, I hereby forward the name of Mr. Godwin I. Emefiele for kind consideration and confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for appointment as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).”
Senate is also expected to consider an amendment of the CBN Act which will, among others, remove a sitting CBN governor from being chairman of the CBN Governing Board.
