Luis Suarez bite: Live updates as FIFA open disciplinary proceedings against striker and Liverpool ponder next move

The striker's latest biting shame, against Italy's Giorgio Chiellini last night, is now being probed - follow all the latest news and reaction throughout the day here

Everton boss Roberto Martinez told ESPN that Suarez "needs help."
Speaking after the match, the Toffees boss, sitting alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy in his role as an ESPN analyst, outlined his concern over the Liverpool man's behaviour.
"There is no doubt that the quality of the talent that he has. He can win games single-handed and he's got that focus, that mentality that he can get back from a situation he shouldn't have derived.
"But the behaviour, I just seriously think that he needs help. If you cannot control yourself in those moments, you need some sort of help because that's just unacceptable on a football pitch."
"This is a behaviour that has happened already two times and Luis Suarez, as a wonderful footballer that he is, has been banned twice. It has been such a controversial way of acting on a football pitch that you see it again and everyone feels upset.
"It's about how Luis Suarez is allowed to play the game without carrying that responsibility that you have as a player, being a role model to the younger generation. You cannot justify it."

Liverpool side-step the incident
Liverpool took an almighty side-step away from the furore last night.
Obviously the Reds won't be wanting to make any rash decisions about content they put on their site regarding El Pistolero in the aftermath of this latest bite controversy, but their match report after Uruguay's 1-0 win over Italy....well it left a lot of blanks.
The liverpoolfc.com report read: "Luis Suarez completed the 90 minutes as Uruguay booked their place in the last 16 of the World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over 10-man Italy."
It detailed how Suarez tested Italy keeper Buffon minutes before his latest moment of madness, but then made no indication as to anything out of the ordinary happening and moved swiftly on.
"With little under 10 minutes left to play, Godin connected with an outswinging corner to power past the goalkeeper and seal a spot in the knockout rounds this weekend.
"Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates was an unused substitute in Natal."
Here's a screenshot:
It'll be interesting when they do finally make a statement precisely what they say.
Martin Lipton's view
The question isn't whether he gets banned. But for how long?
Sepp Blatter has never needed an excuse to climb on his moral high horse.
And Luis Suarez's latest act of utter madness will allow the Swiss to saddle-up, big-time.
Not that anybody, around Montevideo or Melwood, can really argue, whether the suspension is measured in weeks, months or years.
There are few things worse on a pitch that biting an opponent. I'd argue doing it for the third time is probably up there.
Then again, it was equally incomprehensible against Chelsea 14 months ago.

Everyone's tweeting
Twitter has been all over the Luis Suarez situation, with opinions on the Liverpool man's latest incident being offered from all across the globe.
And according to the social networking site, conversation about the striker has erupted following the bite on Chiellini last night.
Still popular, Suarez garnered around 100,000 mentions yesterday, before the incident.
But after trying to sink his teeth in on the Italian defender, mentions of the striker went through the roof, with over TWO MILLION mentions!

Lugano's defence
Another player who had his say on proceedings last night was Uruguay skipper Diego Lugano.
Not involved for La Celeste due to injury, the West Brom defender defended his teammate when speaking to press after the game last night.
And more than that, the 94-cap Uruguayan international, had quite the dig at Giorgio Chiellini for the storm which has arrived following the incident.
"You need to show me the incident, because I didn't see anything," said Lugano.
"Did you see it today or did you see what happened in other years? You couldn't have seen it today because nothing happened.
"Chiellini’s attitude is worst of all. He's a great player, with an enormous status. It doesn't correspond with Italian football. As sportsmen leaving the field, crying and appealing against a rival.
"As a man, he disappointed me totally."

Suarez Liverpool colleague, midfielder Philippe Coutinho, has refused to condemn Luis Suarez for his bite on Giorgio Chiellini.
The Brazilian, speaking on Brazilian television, spoke of his team-mate’s work ethic but declined to comment on the incident in Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Italy.
“We’re good friends,” said Coutinho. “He helped me a lot when I arrived.
“He’s an idol around the world but he is very professional: always the first person to training and the last to leave."

Stan Collymore's take
Any ban imposed on Luis Suarez following his bite on Italy's Giorgio Chiellini must be put "in the context of a mental health evaluation" Stan Collymore has said.
Former England striker Collymore, now a Sunday People columnist and talkSPORT presenter, took to Twitter to call for Suarez's mental health to be assessed before any ban is imposed on him.
He said: "Any Suarez punishment MUST be put in context of any MH evaluation he may have had or has in the future."
Collymore had earlier tweeted that the Uruguay needed psychological support following his latest outrage.

Our man in Natal
There was a sense of disbelief in the press box at Natal's Estadio Das Dunas when Luis Suarez sank his teeth into Giorgio Chiellini's shoulder.
At first glance, it looked as though Suarez had attempted to head-butt Chiellini as the pair tussled in the Italy penalty area, with the score 0-0 and Uruguay 12 minutes from going out of this World Cup.
But TV replays showed the full horror of Suarez's latest act of thuggery, while Chiellini confirmed the Liverpool striker had bitten him, pulling down his shirt to reveal fresh teethmarks in his skin.
7:45 am
A new angle gif has been resized specifically for a Twitter audience -and the results are pretty damning.
In it, you can clearly see that Suarez, after a slight tussle with Chiellini - an extremely slight tussle - inexplicably goes for the shoulder of the Italian defender.
He leans in, and then - madly - sinks his teeth into the left shoulder of the Juve man.

Reaction from Chris Waddle and Paul Scholes
Ex-England international and BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Chris Waddle is in no doubt about what needs to happen to Suarez following the latest episode - he needs to be "severely punished."
Waddle, who played for England at the 1990 World Cup, told the BBC that the Liverpool striker must be heavily penalised for his actions, and believes that the Uruguayan should be made to wear a gumshield on the field.
"Suarez has to get severely punished," he said.
"Let's see how strong Fifa are. There will be people who will defend him, but I don't know why. I'd make him wear a gumshield."
Similarly, ex-Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, writing on his Paddy Power blog, declared that Suarez had "embarrassed his club, country and family."
Scholes said: "He will feel terrible tonight, and the entire incident is such a shame because he’s a tremendous player.
"But people will remember Suarez now for his biting antics at this World Cup rather than his supreme footballing ability."
7:35 am
The man bitten, Giorgio Chiellini, was left furious by the event.
The Italian defender - himself no stranger to on-field controversy - called the Uruguayan "a sneak" and questioned the referee following the Azzurri's loss to la Celeste.
"Suarez is a sneak and he gets away with it because Fifa want their stars to play in the World Cup.
"I'd love to see if they have the courage to use video evidence against him."
