Transfer deadline day gossip round-up

Things didn't get any better for Blackpool yesterday, after a dismal few months at the club.
The Seasiders have had a nightmare summer in which they had to overhaul nearly their whole squad, barely had enough players to field a team on the opening weekend of the Championship, and have lost their first 5 games.
Despite  still being desperately short on quality, the club brought in no new players yesterday and, what's more, the Blackpool Gazette reports that neither manager Jose Riga or chairman Karl Oysten spent any time at the club on transfer deadline day.
Just to stick the knife in, the same paper also suggests that assistant Bart De Roover may have left the club, although nothing has yet been confirmed.
Oh dear, this is already a year to forget for the Tangerines.

Twitter outburst by Liverpool's Borini
Fabio Borini, who will be staying at Liverpool after turning down summer moves to Sunderland and QPR, has taken to Twitter to defend his decision to stay at Anfield.
The Italian has failed to make the mark at the Merseyside club and Brendan Rodgers was happy for him to leave, suggesting he won't have a big role to play at the club this season.
But the 23-year-old insists that he's good enough to make the grade with the Reds and is happy he stayed.
He said: "Finally the madness is finished! I protected the MAN and the player that I am today... taking all the responsibility of the situation and for people who didn't want it.
"...and I'm very happy with myself to have taken such an important decision!"
Hmmm, but maybe is what we should expect from a man who likes to favourite the abuse he gets from Sunderland fans...

Remember the days?
Manchester United spent enough this summer to make Chelsea and Manchester City wince and reflexively reach for their wallets.
They also let several players leave in order to make room for the raft of summer star signings.
But not everyone is happy with the change of personnel and Danny Welbeck's switch to Arsenal is a bone of contention for many, including Mike Phelan.
The former United assistant manager believes that the club are losing their identity in trading the homegrown 23-year-old, who has been within their ranks for 13 years, for a Colombian superstar in teh form of Radamel Falcao.
And speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, he said that the attenuated rate with which Manchester United are promoting from within their own ranks is disappointing.
He said: "Danny Welbeck has been part of United's identity and that has been broken.
"What will happen in the future now, nobody knows, but that thread has been broken now."

Falcao: I'll bring titles back to Old Trafford
Radamel Falcao wants to bring "happiness, goals and titles" to Manchester United's fans.
Falcao made the pledge in his first interview as a United player after completing his season-long loan switch from Monaco in the early hours of this morning.
The Colombia striker, who has netted 220 goals in 356 games for club and country, claims he is pleased he is at Old Trafford after a summer of frenzied speculation about his future.
When asked if he had a message for the fans, he told MUTV: "Yes, I want to say thank you because I have read a lot of messages from them. And I hope I can give them a lot of happiness, goals and titles.
"I am very happy to be part of this big club. I've waited for this moment during a lot of the year. Now I am a player of Manchester United.
"We have very top players. I admire them. I want to meet them for the first time. I am sure that this season will be great for us."
He added: "Yes, it was a very long day. It was hard, difficult. We were waiting until the last minute but I didn't lose my faith. Now I want to say thank you to God for this. I'm very happy."
Falcao, 28, claims he was not put off by United's slump and insists they remain England's top team.
The South American says he is also excited by working with Louis van Gaal and he is yet to meet the Dutchman, who is on a short break.
"Yes, I am very excited for that," said the former Atletico Madrid hitman. "Van Gaal is a very good trainer with a lot of experience. I want to do the best for the team, for him and for the supporters.
"For me, it was a dream to play in the Premier League. I always wanted to be here because this league is very good.
"It has very good teams and Manchester United is the best team in England. Everything is perfect for me.
"I hope the Spanish speakers can help me. I need them to train my English. I think they will help me in a lot of things to feel comfortable in the club."

Barca keep Alves for one more year
Dani Alves looked like he'd definitely be leaving the Nou Camp this year, but with the summer transfer window now closed, the Brazilian is still a Barcelona man.
Sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta is pleased that the full-back will still be in Luis Enrique's plans this season, although the player will not stay beyond the end of the year.
He said: "We are very happy that Dani Alves has stayed here. Both sides have agreed that his contract will finish in 2015."
On the subject of Barcelona's squad - which is now set for the next two windows - he said: "We are where we want ot be and with the squad we wanted in order to be competitive again."
The club also posted this helpful graphic of their first-team squad numbers:

All the done deals from a record summer
So, with the dust settling on the transfer window and the usual panicked last-minuted deals trickling through at a steady clip yesterday, we saw deals totalling £835million this summer.
That's a record. In fact, it's over £200million more than was spent just 12 months ago and suggests that the increased television deals are being put to full effect by Premier League clubs.
We also saw a British record transfer with Manchester United's £59.7million capture of Angel Di Maria - it will surprise no one that the Red Devils were the biggest spenders in the league.
To find out every single confirmed deal in and out of the top flight, just follow the jump.

So you may have known this, but apparently the phrase 'down to the wire' comes from horse-racing.
In the early 19th century, before we had high-speed cameras for those photo finishes, a wire was strung across the track above the finishing line to help the stewards in deciding, by eye, which horse was first across the line.
In their pursuit of Tom CleverleyAston Villa seem to have taken things down to the wire and carried on galloping for another furlong or two...
So with that in mind, do you think Villa's move for the Manchester United midfielder should be allowed to stand?
