CRIME: 27 Traffic Offenders Arraigned In A/Ibom





Worried by incessant road accidents and the attendant loss of human lives, the Akwa Ibom State command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has dragged 27 persons before a mobile court in Uyo for various traffic offences by the state.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the trial, the state public relations officer of the command, Mr Godsgift Owen, said the offenders were put on trial for offences such as use of cell phone while driving, failure to wear seat belt, invalid drivers license, worn out tyres , absence of number plates, speed limit violation, dangerous driving, among others.

The FRSC image maker added that some of the offenders that pleaded guilty to their charges were made to pay fines in order to regain their freedom while one of them was discharged and acquitted.

He explained that the essence of the trial of the offenders was to instill punitive measures against any culpable motorist to serve as deterrent to others.

Uwem noted that most of the offenders were warned severally on the need to obey traffic laws and regulations in order not to endanger the lives of other road users.

He said that the arraignment of the offenders was part of FRSC strategies adopted to minimize incidences of road accident in the state.

He said, The predominant risk factors attributed to the state are majorly failure to wear sit belt while driving, speed limit violation and dangerous driving, which are very important factors that we are campaigning against.

We have fashioned out strategies on how to minimize road crashes in the state especially now that we are approaching ember months and the peak of raining season.

The command has been campaigning for the need of speed limit devices to be installed in all commercial vehicles in the state as measure to check over-speeding by drivers

Owen said that the command would not relent in its efforts to carry out public enlightenment campaigns across all motor parks in the state and advised drivers that before a vehicle leaves the park, it should undergo necessary checks to determine its road worthiness, effective breaks and good spare tyres to avoid crashes.
