A confident Robin van Persie is left red faced as James Rodriguez scoops FIFA Puskas Award

Robin van Persie was unable to attend the awards ceremony despite being nominated for best goal, don't worry though Ruud Gullit will pick up the award for him...

James Rodriguez was the winner of the Fifa goal of the year award for his strike against Uruguay during the World Cup, beating Robin van Persie and Stephanie Roche in the process.

Rodriguez's 25 yard volley for Colombia was enough to claim victory, even if Manchester United striker van Persie thought he had it in the bag.

Many tipped RvP's stunning header for the Netherlands against then defending World Champions Spain to win the coveted prize... so much so that the striker had made plans to receive the trophy.
Van Persie was unable to attend the ceremony as he had planned to have a scan on an injured ankle picked up in the 1-0 defeat against Southampton at the weekend.

But half expecting the trophy, RvP had planned for Ruud Gullit to collect the award on his behalf...

Awkard.
