Keshi resumes without assistants

Stephen Keshi is expected to resume his new 2-year contract as Super Eagles’ head coach without assistant coaches.

Although his employer, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has since announced changes in the backroom staff, namely, the team’s Media Officer, Equipment Manager and Coordinator, the Abuja Glass House has not made any pronouncement on coaches to work with the Eagles’ manager, and is not in a hurry to do so.

Vice President of the NFF, Bar. Seyi Akinwunmi, who confirmed as much, said the Super Eagles’ assistant coaches would be named ‘in due time’

In his first term as Eagles’ head coach, Keshi was assisted by Daniel Amokachi, Ike Shorunmu, Valeri Hondonou from Benin Republic and Sylvanus Okpala who was fired by the NFF after the Eagles’ triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

There are, however, indications that Amokachi who served as Keshi’s first assistant in the last dispensation and even took charge of the team in the absence of the Big Boss, is not considered to retain his place in the Eagles’ technical crew having fallen apart with Keshi.

While the fate of Shorunmu and Hondonou is still uncertain, El-Kanemi Warriors’ coach, Salisu Yusuf, is being tipped to replace Amokachi as Keshi’s first assistant coach in Eagles’ technical order.

“We are not presenting any assistant coach now, we have only presented the chief coach and that is how it is. I assure you we will do that in due time, but it’s just about the chief coach for now. When the time comes you will know, so just be patient,” NFF Vice-President, Akinwunmi told SL10.com.
