Sergio Ramos had ended speculation about a move to Manchester United by agreeing a new five-year contract at Real Madrid.

Spain defender Ramos had emerged as a top target for United manager Louis van Gaal this summer but the capital giants announced on Monday that a new deal had been signed.
Reports had suggested the 29-year-old had indicated he was prepared to discuss a move to England after the former champions launched a £28.6million bid, but he will now commit to a new contract to stay with the La Liga outfit until 2020.

United had hoped to bring Ramos to Old Trafford in a part-exchange deal which would have allowed countryman and goalkeeper David De Gea to seal a move back to his homeland to join Rafael Benitez's title-chasers.

Ramos moved to the Santiago Bernabeu from Sevilla in 2006 and has won three La Liga titles, the Champions League and Uefa Super Cup, as well as collecting two Copa del Rey and Super Cup titles. The central defender has made over 400 appearances in all competitions for the club.

In 2010 he was part of Spain's World Cup-winning squad in South Africa and either side of that helped his country win two European Championship titles.

Former Atletico Madrid No. 1 De Gea has not played in both of United's opening wins so far this season in the Premier League after Van Gaal said his goalkeeper lacked "focus" because of speculation about a return back to Spain.
