Buhari seeks ‘fearless’ judges to try looters

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has commenced the process of identifying a few fearless and courageous judges who will be saddled with the responsibility of prosecuting persons suspected to have stolen national resources,

Buhari had, while granting audience to members of the National Peace Committee led by Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday, disclosed that the prosecution of the indicted persons would commence in a matter of weeks.

Alagba: May God bless Buhari. Even while the administration is still very young, he has given us the hope that we could get back our lost glory one day. Nigeria, by all standards, should be the giant of Africa. There is hope that we will reclaim the position in the nearest future.

Benson Nwokeoma: As a Nigerian, I am very glad for what the President is doing. So far, he has shown courage. But he should ensure that all corrupt past leaders are investigated. Many people will have an issue with him if he is partial. Corruption is worse than HIV/AIDS. As much as the President can, activities of those in leadership as far back as three decades ago should be investigated. Much noise has been made about the Abacha loots. Despite Buhari’s previous position that the late military head of state did not steal from Nigeria, his family should be probed.

Chibuzor Eze: Is probing all Buhari was elected for? There is no day we don’t read a fresh story on looted funds and how those responsible will be probed. Yet, not a single person has been probed yet. I am beginning to believe that the administration is out to distract attention from its shortcoming. It seems that it has no solution to our problems. Is he playing tricks or what?

As much as Nigerians are angry over the manner the past administrations stole the wealth of the nation, they want a government that is responsive to existing and new challenges. Buhari should rise to the responsibility rather than repeating what he intends to do to those who stole from the country. Go ahead and probe suspects rather than doing it on the pages on newspapers. But that must not be the ultimate thing. Economy, infrastructure and security are key areas that require urgent attention. These must not be abandoned for any reason.
