Ex-minister of Education Olaiya Oni Dies At 74

A former Minister of Education and pioneer Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Ondo state , Dr. Olaiya Oni , is dead.

Oni, who was born 74 years ago, died yesterday after being hospitalised at undisclosed hospital in Owo local government area of the state.

According to a source within the family, the former minister has been battling with health challenges since 2012 before he eventually passed on yesterday.

The source added that Oni relocated from Akure to his home town, Ise-Akoko in Akoko North East local government area of the state due to his health challenges.

It was gathered that the former minister’s health degenerated three days ago and he was rushed to undisclosed hospital in Owo before he gave up the ghost.

Oni, who was appointed as the Minister of Education during the regime of Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar, played a crucial role in the political journey of Labour Party (LP) which kicked out the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by late former Governor Olusegun Agagu in 2009 in the state.

In 2013, the former minister quietly quit politics on the grounds of the health challenges.

Confirming Oni’s death ,former deputy governorship candidate of the PDP in 2012 governorship election, Hon. Saka Lawal, described his death as “devastating and unbelievable”.

A sympathiser who sought anonymity over the matter, said , “It is so painful that Baba Olaiya Oni died. I recalled he called me that he was quitting politics that he can’t cope with the lifestyle of the PDP national leaders that they preferred to recognise Mimiko, who was in LP but stylishly abandoned their candidate, Olushola Oke.

“Baba said he will be focusing on his “Wallet factory” in Akure where he produced cartons for goods package. But, he was frustrated when the electricity power line that brought light to the area where the factory was located was cut off. We believe that this was deliberately done to him just because he parted ways with the then LP.

“He has no choice than to close down the company. He relocated to Ise-Akoko and since then, his health status started degenerating until he says goodbye to this sinful world.”

Also, a former Commissioner for Natural Resource in Ondo State, Mr. Solagbade Amodeni, described the late Oni as an accomplished civil servant who rose to the highest position of the head of service and secretary to the Old Ondo State government.

Amodeni added that his remarkable profile fetched him the appointment of education minister under Gen. Abubakar.
