Android 6.0 Marshmallow update roadmap: Samsung Note 5, S6 early next year but what about S4?

A leaked document posted by Phone Arena shows that Samsung's Galaxy Note 5 will get the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update next month. This was followed by the Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge that will be getting their updates on Jan. 2016. The Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge have been approved and will be updated by Feb. 2014. The Galaxy S5 has also been approved but will be updated by the company on April 2016.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy Tabs S2 9.7" and S2 8" which are the last three Samsung devices for the Phase 1 Android 6 update are still waiting for approval. There is no ETA for the last three gadgets. The photo also revealed that Samsung has prioritized the updates on their newer smartphone models and tabs. According to Tech Times, the phase 1 models are already running on Android OS version 5.1.1 Lollipop which makes it easier to receive the newest OS.


There are three phases in all. The company's Galaxy A, E, and TB S series have been slated in phase 2. The only model approved so far is the Galaxy A8 and the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 where the updates will roll out on March 2016 and April 2016 respectively. Meanwhile, the Galaxy J1 has been cancelled while the rest of the models are waiting approval with no ETA yet.


It was worth noting that the Samsung S4 and Galaxy Note 3 were pushed back to Phase 3. The status for the two was "Not Approved." Together with the two are the Galaxy Tabs A 9.7 and A 8 which are waiting for approval.


The Android 6.0 Marshmallow was launched in October and is the latest version of Google's mobile operating system. According to CNET, the new version comes with key features Google Now on Tap, improved battery utilization through the Doze feature, and support for Google Play.


Additionally, the Marshmallow has a lot of neat features for the newest Nexus phones by Google. CNET reports that through the Marshmallow, those who do not like pressing the power button twice as the camera shortcut for Nexus 5X and 6P can be disabled. It can even activate the LED notification light for the smartphones too. The Android 6.0 update can support fingerprint sensors as well.
