2 dead, 9 wounded in city shootings




A man and a woman were killed and at least nine other people have been wounded in shootings since late Tuesday morning in the city, police said.


A 23-year-old woman was shot to death around 12:05 a.m. Wednesday in the South Chicago neighborhood on the South Side, police said.


The woman was walking on the sidewalk in the 8700 block of South Burley Avenue when someone in a black SUV fired shots, striking her in the chest. She was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.


Police said a “possible offender” is in custody.


Earlier, about 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, three teens were shot on the West Side, one fatally. It happened in the 100 block of North Lavergne Avenue in the Austin neighborhood.


An 18-year-old man, identified by relatives as Keyon Boyd, 18, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.


Two boys, 13 and 17, were also wounded when two people walked out of an alley and opened fire on the group, police said.


In other shootings:


About 2:10 a.m. Wednesday, a 20-year-old woman was wounded in a shooting in the Roseland neighborhood on the South Side, police said.


The woman was sitting in a parked vehicle in the 100 block of West 112th Street when she heard shots and realized she was struck in the right buttock. She managed to get to Roseland Community Hospital, where was listed in good condition.


About 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, a 45-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the 5600 block of South Racine Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side police said. The man was sitting on the front porch of a home when a male attacker fired shots from the sidewalk. The man was shot in the right foot and was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital, where his condition stabilized, police said.


About 10:30 p.m., a 20-year-old woman was wounded in a shooting in the West Pullman neighborhood on the South Side, police said. She was standing in an alley in the 12400 block of South Normal Avenue with two other people when an attacker fired shots. The woman was hit in the back, and she was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where her condition stabilized.


Three people were hurt in separate bursts of gunfire that happened around 7:30 p.m. in the West Englewood and Dearborn Homes neighborhoods.


About 7:45 p.m., a 50-year-old male was shot in the arm in the 6400 block of South Wolcott Avenue, also in the city’s West Englewood neighborhood, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago police spokesman. He told police he heard gunshots and realized he was struck. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.


About 7:40 p.m., someone shot a 29-year-old man in the leg in the 6600 block of South Ashland Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a spokesman for Chicago police. The man managed to get himself to Holy Cross Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.


About 7:25 p.m., a 32-year-old woman was grazed in the abdomen during a shooting in the 2900 block of South Dearborn Street in the Dearborn Homes neighborhood. She was treated on the scene, and she refused to go to the hospital, Alfaro said.


Much earlier, about 12:20 p.m., a 51-year-old woman was walking into a house in the 6300 block of South Mozart Street in the city's Marquette Park neighborhood when she heard shots and felt pain, police said.


The woman, who was not the intended target, suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where her condition has stabilized, according to police.
