D’banj, Timaya: No Longer Local Artistes

Recently, there have been closed scrutinies on artistes that have really broken the jinx of being just local performers. While some have refused to grow, others are basking in the euphoria. The duo of Koko master and Egberi Papa 1 have shown that as an artistes you can keep your genre and still be internationally acclaimed.

Above all odds they came like the silken drapes, looking at the top as their stepping stone. From a humble beginning, they fought through the competitive market, trying to gain attention from their Nigerian fans.
Music is food to the soul, but even as food it must be worthwhile for listeners to enjoy the beat, rhythm, lyrics or the intended message.
Nigeria is a big market for musicians…no matter what an artiste’s sings, he/she will surely get a fan base because of the unquenchable appetite of the people.
From years back, many artistes have come and gone and have tried to break through internationally. Though many have featured some known faces in the industry internationally, but the end product of their videos and songs are whack (bad).
Little wonder, their songs don’t receive rave as it should. Their presentation, message and features are like ‘, child’s play’.

Singing outside the country
To be an international artiste doesn’t mean one must sing or shoot his videos outside the country. The psychological effect of being an internationally acclaimed doesn’t come easy. Many Nigeria artistes have mistaken these while going to South Africa and other European countries to shoot their videos under mango tree, a dilapidated rail track or even on refuse dumps while some even lied of featuring an artiste that they could call on  anytime which is annoying, disgraceful and  confusing.
That jinx has been broken by two people
Timaya has stepped-up his game:
Everyone knows how Timaya started. He would say they don’t want him to succeed because of his talent. But the truth still remains that he has stepped-up his game. When he released his song ‘Ukwu,’ there was no doubt that the Egberi Papa 1of Bayelsa has upgraded. The video would keep anyone hooked for as long as the song last. The dancers, the British police, the cell and everything are on point.
The video beat and the energy in the song makes it compete for any laurel. Even without listening to what he was singing—the beat will surely sweep anyone off their feet. That’s a song no one even the international artistes will call ‘whack!’
When the news went viral that Timaya had remixed his Bum Bum song, what came to mind was one of those things. But when Sean Paul was said to be  the one featured on the remix, there was no doubt that they have killed it. Fresh off a huge performance with Machel Montano in Trinidad and Tobago, Timaya is seen as the King of the Dance-Floor today and has just wrapped up the video for his blockbuster collaboration with Sean Paul on the remix to the international smash single “BumBum”. The video was directed by the acclaimed Shooter Films (worked with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music) in Miami. And the video will drops sometime this month. The Egberi Papa 1 is no longer of Bayelsa, but of Africa, spreading his wings to the world and is here to stay.
D’banj spreading the Koko internationally:
Since he left Mohit, his life has not been the same he has grown to be one o the most sought after artiste in the world. His departure from Don Jazzy has not made him look lesser than what he used to be, instead he has upgraded to another level.
As a tribute to his mentor Fela, D’banj bringsAfrobeat to life and into the 21st century with breathless enthusiasm as well as a good dose of humour. His songs are based on his life, often hilarious but with a deeper meaning which documents the struggle of a young Nigerian trying to achieve his dreams. He performs in Yoruba, English and Pidgin English. On June 23, 2012, D’banj performed at the Hackney Weekend to celebrate the 2012 Summer Olympics, which was headlined by Jay-Z andRihanna. He performed alongside his friend, and fellow Universal Music Group label mate, Rita Oraon 30 August 2012 at the SCALA London Live Music, Clubs and Arts Venue to celebrate the release of her debut album Ora. He also performed at the AFCON 2013 closing ceremony held in South Africa.
“Oliver Twist” is a song by the Nigerian singer-songwriter. The track was first released in the United Kingdom on May 11, 2012 as the first single from DB Records’ first compilation album, D’Kings Men (2013).  Oliver Twist debuted at number nine on the UK Singles Chart—marking the musician’s first chart appearance.
Lyrically, the song expresses D’banj’s crave for more women, relating to how the fictional character Oliver Twist asked for more gruel.
His stint with Kanye West Good Music made him one of Africa most respected and sought after artistes. Whenever his songs are aired, one could feel the aura and interest. Now Nigerians are waiting for a Grammy winner, who would it be?
