Two feared killed by Fulani herdsmen

Tension was high yesterday in Makurdi, the Benue State capital after two persons were killed in a farm by suspected Fulani herdsmen. The incident occurred at the Welfare Quarters area of the metropolis.

Daily Sun gathered from a  police source that a relation of one of the deceased had reported that his brother, who went to farm and did not return was traced to the farm only for them to discover his dead body with matchet cuts.

The Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO),  Daniel Ezeala , who confirmed the report, said police immediately followed the family to the farm and discovered another  corpse  which was burnt beyond recognition by the side of the corpse of the man that was earlier reported.

Ezeala said both corpses were removed from the farm by the police and taken to the mortuary in Makurdi.

In another development, one person was said to have been killed by a soldier at Benue Cement Company located in Tse Kutcha, Gboko Local Government area of the state.

A  source at the cement factory, who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonimity said the problem  that started between the soldier and a young man in the area soon degenerated to a big fight which culminated in the killing of one person.

He said youths in the area immediately hijacked the crisis and started blocking the major highway in the area thus preventing motorists from plying the road.

The insider, who lamented that the situation was already affecting business activities at the company said people were running helter-skelter at the time he was speaking with our correspondent.

Confirming the report, the PPRO said police immediately moved in and removed the blockade from the road while also trying to restore peace in the area.

Ezeala, who warned people of the state against rumour mongering disclosed that more policemen had already been deployed to the state to maintain peace, law and order and urged people to go about their businesses without fear.
