Rescue workers are battling against the clock to try and rescue people believed to be trapped in the aircraft after it hit a bridge before crashing into a river.

This extraordinary image shows the wreckage of a taxi struck by the wing of the TransAsia plane as it crashed.

The vehicle was crushed as the aircraft came down, hit the parapet of the bridge and then ended up in the Keelung River below.

A man can be seen emerging from the taxi and later sitting down beside the road to make a phone call.

If this is the driver then he is perhaps the luckiest man alive today.

Chief Executive of TransAsia offers 'deep apology' after plane crash

The chief executive of TransAsia has apologised after the plane crash.

Chen Xinde bowed at a news conference, carried live on Taiwan television, as he offered a "deep apology" to the passengers and crew on board.

The plane was carrying 58 people, 31 of them from mainland China.

The death toll from the plane crash has reportedly risen to 13.

The new figure was reported by CCTV news on Twitter.

The message was accompanied with a photo of the ongoing search for survivors.

China has set up a hotline for people concerned their relatives may have been on the plane.

The country's Xinhua News Agency earlier reported that 31 Chinese passengers were on board.

This figure has been confirmed by Taiwan's tourism bureau.

The hotline number from mainland China is 0592-7227777.

The plane which crashed was an ATR-72 being operated by TransAsia Airways.

The firm was founded in 1951 and was Taiwan's first private civilian-operated domestic airline.

It later expanded to offer overseas flights.

The firm has about 20 planes - a mix of Airbus and dual-propeller ATR planes - and has increased customer numbers due to its low-cost tickets.

It flies many routes between Taiwan and mainland China, and also to other parts of South East Asia.

The youngster was among 28 passengers saved.

Nineteen are still unaccounted for.

Rescuers are battling to find survivors from the wreckage of the plane, which is now half submerged in Taipei's Keelung River.

The revised figure is being reported by China's Xinhua News Agency.

The government in China has offered its condolences to the people of the breakaway island after the tragedy.

The Taipei fire department has sent vehicles and speedboats to the scene to help with rescue efforts.

TV news reports said around a dozen people on the plane were rescued and sent to a nearby hospital and another 10 or so were still believed to be trapped in the aircraft.

It was not known whether those still inside were alive or dead.

Rescue efforts are ongoing.

The crash follows last July's TransAsia aeroplane crash on Taiwan's outlying island of Penghu, when dozens lost their lives during a crash landing following bad weather.

At least nine people have been killed and dozens more are trapped after a plane crashed into a river in Taiwan.

The TransAsia ATR 72-600 plane - which had 53 passengers on board - was on a domestic flight when it hit a road bridge in the capital Taipei.

The moment of impact was captured on a driver's dashcam, and shows the aircraft's wing clipping a car in front before it disappears out of view.

At least 10 people have been taken to safety, according to Taiwan's Central News Agency.

The flight, from Taipei to the island of Kinmen, lost contact with air traffic control at 10.55am local time.
