Facebook has joined the space of live video streaming services like Periscope and Meerkat with the launch of a new live video streaming platform featured on its Mentions app called “Live” which has been in the works since September. Live is a but different as it’ll be only available to celebrities with a verified page for now.

Celebrities can begin a live video stream with the new service which will surface on the News Feed with real-time comments steadily flowing in at a readable pace. Facebook will also send out alerts to fans of the page and users who recently interacted with the page to tune in to the stream.

TechCrunch speaking to Facebook’s Live product manager Vadim Lavrusik on the rationale behind opening the app to celebrities/VIPs only, said “Public figures already have fans on Facebook that they share to every single day.” And when it’ll arrive for the average user he said, “We think this will be an awesome experience for both public figures and also users. We want to get feedback from both public figures and viewers as we evolve the product.”

Broadcasters can choose to delete their streams on Live or allow it to be re-watched on the News Feed (though without the live tag) with comments shown naturally.
