No. 5 Stan Wawrinka opened the day on the men's draw with a win that was shaky at times but ultimately decisive over Donald Young.

Wawrinka controlled the match with his power, ripping 11 aces, winning 81 percent of his first-serve points and smashing 52 winners to just 14 for Young. He also took advantage of the rare opportunities Young afforded him, winning all four of the break points he earned against the scrappy American while also rushing the net with success, winning 20 of his 31 net points.

His powerful backhand in the third set, shared by U.S. Open Tennis on Twitter, was indicative of the entire match:

He did drop the second set, winning just one game, so it wasn't all dominance from the French Open winner. If nothing else, he certainly was entertaining to watch on the day, as Joe Posnanski of NBC Sports noted:

Wawrinka will face the winner of No. 3 Andy Murray and No. 15 Kevin Anderson.

There weren't many surprises on the women's draw during the early play on Monday at the U.S. Open, as No. 2 Simona Halep, No. 20 Victoria Azarenkaand No. 26 Flavia Pennetta all advanced.

While Azarenka and Pennetta were each tested, they both won in straight sets. Halep had a more difficult task on her hands against No. 24 Sabine Lisicki, however, dropping a first-set tiebreaker before rallying to win the next two sets.

Halep won the war, but Lisicki won the most notable battle on the day, as the pair had an epic rally in the second set, per the U.S. Open on Twitter:

Halep had a few tricks up her sleeve, however:

Reaching the quarterfinals has been a major positive for Halep, who lost in the second round at the French Open and the first round at Wimbledon while changing coaches twice this year, settling on Darren Cahill, per Naila-Jean Meyersof the New York Times.

This is also her first quarterfinal at the U.S. Open, so Monday's result was a huge one.

“This year it’s more quiet around me, so it’s good,” Halep told Meyers on Saturday. “I feel good.”

She may not be feeling good for long, however, as awaiting her will be a very tough opponent in Azarenka, who won 70 percent of first-serve points and 70 percent of her net points to dispose of Varvara Lepchenko. A foot injury has derailed her for much of 2015, much like 2014, but Azarenka is starting to look like the player who twice won at the Australian Open before tumbling down the rankings.

Howard Bryant of ESPN The Magazinethinks Azarenka is a player capable of giving Serena Williams a run for her money if they meet in the final:

Of course, it should be noted that Williams is 17-3 all-time against Azarenka and 10-0 against her in the Grand Slams, including wins over her in the French Open and at Wimbledon this year. It should also be noted that both players need to actually reach the final for any such discussion to be truly relevant.

Still, Azarenka remains a player capable of upsetting Williams, if somewhat unlikely to do so given the pair's track record.

Pennetta could have a difficult quarterfinal of her own, meanwhile, as she'll await the winner of No. 5 Petra Kvitova and Johanna Konta. She was excellent against Samantha Stosur, winning 85 percent of her first-serve points and allowing just four break points to Stosur without ever being broken in the match.
