AMAA 2016 Organizers announce venue, nominations and awards date

Organizers of the 2016 AMAA awards have revealed the venue, nominations night, and awards night date. Here's everything you need to know.

The prestigious pan-African reward system for the motion picture practitioners, African Movie Academy Awards has announced Port Harcourt, Capital of Rivers State as venue for the 2016 edition.

This comes after nine consecutive editions in Bayelsa State, one in Abuja, Lagos, and South Africa respectively.

The Governor Nyesom Wike led state signed the hosting rights with the management of AMAA. In a statement jointly signed by the state Commissioner of Culture & Tourism, Mrs. Tonye Briggs (on behalf of Governor Wike) and the founder of the awards organization, Ms. Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, hosting the award this year will be the beginning of a partnership that will add immense value to the people of the state and the host city in particular as the government is determined to position Port Harcourt as a destination of choice in Nigeria and West Africa.

“We are repositioning Rivers State as a state ready for business to Nigerians and the rest of the world and our partnership with AMAA will become a veritable platform to attract tourists, global and Nigeria icons in business and the entertainment industry. We want to showcase Rivers State as a peaceful place where socio-economic activities thrive and also the hospitality of our people. There is a huge economy around entertainment and show business in Port Harcourt. Mrs. Briggs said.

This year’s awards will take place on Saturday June 11, 2016, and the nomination night where nominees into the 28 categories will be announced will hold on Wednesday May 11, 2016.

The previous nomination venues include Accra, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Banjul, Lilongwe, Ouagadougou and Los Angeles.

The awards night will be telecast live by Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).


The 2015 edition of AMAA held on Saturday, September 26, 2015, at Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

The event was attended by top actors like Desmond Elliot, Ini Edo, Eniola Badmus, Robert Peters, Queen Nwokoye, Kunle Afolayan, Chioma Chukwuka among others.

Big winners of the 2015 edition include 'October 1,' 'iNumber Number ' and Timbuktu'.

Following the 2016 edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, critics came for the Africa Movie Academy Awards,comparing the two awards.

The criticisms and negative comments directed at AMAA, the CEO of the awards body, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, led to an open letter to those who have issues with the award platform.
