Obama: Trump’s ‘lack of preparedness’ to be prez will hurt world

President Obama on Sunday doubled down on his belief that Donald Trump is wildly unprepared to be the nation’s commander-in-chief, listing off a litany of foreign policy-related reasons how the mogul’s lack of understanding of international politics could damage the world and suggesting that some of his harsh rhetoric was even helping terrorist groups like ISIS.
Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. could refuse to defend its allies in NATO unless they pay their fair share of the costs were a prime example of the GOP nominee’s “lack of preparedness” on foreign policy, Obama said in an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
"I think that anybody who's been paying attention knows there is a big difference between challenging our European allies to keep up their defense spending, particularly at a time when Russia's been more aggressive, and saying to them, 'You know what? We might not abide by the central tenant of the most important alliance in the history of the world,'” Obama told the network.
“For Mr. Trump, who has in the past suggested that America's weak and not looking out for its allies, to then maybe not have enough information or understanding to go out and say that America might not stand by its solemn commitment to protect those same allies who stood with us after 9/11 when we were attacked," Obama added, "I think is an indication of the lack of preparedness that he has been displaying when it comes to foreign policy."
Obama went on to say that many of Trump’s most controversial proposals, like banning Muslims from entering the U.S., would actually make the nation, and world, less safe and is “ultimately helping do (ISIS’s) work."
“If we start engaging in the kinds of proposals that we've heard from Mr. Trump or some of his surrogates like Mr. (Newt) Gingrich, where we start suggesting that we would apply religious tests to who could come in here, that we are screening Muslim Americans differently than we would others, then we are betraying that very thing that makes America exceptional,” said Obama, who has taken on an increasingly vocal role in the 2016 election since endorsing Hillary Clinton last month.
And as far his opinion on Clinton?
Obama, who will speak at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday night, reiterated his belief that she’s the most qualified presidential candidate in U.S. history, but chided her for not being “flashy.”
“She's not always flashy. And there are better speechmakers,” Obama joked. “But she knows her stuff. And more than anything, that is what is ultimately required to do a good job in this office.”
“This is somebody who knows as much about domestic and foreign policy as anybody, is tough as nails, is motivated by what's best for America and ordinary people, understands that in this democracy that we have — things don't always happen as fast as we'd like,” he said.
