Serena Williams Injury: Updates on Tennis Star's Shoulder and Return

Serena Williams has had trouble with injuries this season, and now the world's top-ranked player is dealing with shoulder inflammation.

Per the Coupe Rogers' official Twitter account, Williams has withdrawn from the tournament as a result of her shoulder injury.

The 34-year-old hasn't played in a tournament since winning Wimbledon two weeks ago, which was her first major title of the season. She's preparing to head to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics, which begin Aug. 5.

Williams pulled out of the Hopman Cup in January with an inflamed left knee.

It's not as if Williams' play is suffering because of the injuries, as evidenced by her triumph in England. And her ability to respond in the face of adversity is what makes her a living legend.

Over the last few years, Williams has focused on being prepared for the four Grand Slams, with the Games also a top priority this year. She will not risk missing those events and will get her shoulder as close to 100 percent as possible before competing in Brazil.
