Jonathan chairs last Council of State meeting today

President Goodluck Jonathan will preside over his last Council of State meeting today.

The meeting is scheduled to hold at the State House, Abuja at 11 am.

The council consists of the President (as the Chairman), Vice President, all former presidents or former heads of state, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria (CJN), president of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, all governors and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
The last time the Council met was in February.

The body was formed to advise the President in the exercise of his powers.

These include the. appointment of Chairman and members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); national census and compilation; prerogative of mercy; award of national honours; the National Judicial Council (including the appointment of the members, other than ex-officio); and the National Population Commission (including the appointment of members).

The council also approves the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police.
